Trick that helped me a lot with MCQ

    Hi guys,

I use a trick to pump my score on the CPA progress and final test.

I got that one on the final Becker and I got similar ones too on progress tests.

The trick to those MCQs is if you are unsure, always select the answer that is given more than ones in the MCQ; the examiners want to trick you, so that if you are really sure of one of them, you’d actually have to make sure you calculate the other. So I wasn’t sure and selected 245,000 for program because it appears more than once, and selected 90,000 for support for the same reason.

It’s my way and it’s effective.

Top Notch Golf & Country Club is organized as a not-for-profit organization. The club has experienced rapidly declining membership in recent years and its board of directors has made increased membership a major objective. The club incurred the following outlays at the end of the current fiscal year:

$250,000 in renovations to locker rooms

$180,000 for new assistant golf professionals

$220,000 for upgrades to pro shop inventory

$65,000 for upscale linens and restaurant supplies

$35,000 for staff dedicated to membership development

$55,000 for promotional and fund raising brochures

The outlays listed above should appear in which expense classifications:

    Program Services -Support Services

    a. $715,000 – $90,000

    b. $245,000 – $340,000

    c. $245,000 – $90,000

    d. $465,000 – $90,000

    Answer is c.

What is your sample size? what is your tolerable misstatement and deviation rate? How did you assess control risk?

Sorry 🙂 just tired from cramming today (secretly at work) and at the public library…… Thanks for the tip!

I sometimes use this “trick” too. The key phrase, of course, is only if you're unsure.

If there's two columns sometimes it's easier to do the second calculation first because it may be easier. In your example that would only eliminate one answer though.

Another is to look for the odd answer. If a questions has, for example, the amounts of $5000 and $500, the answer choices may look like the following:

    A: $5500

    B: $4500

    C: $500

    D: $4750

D could be the correct answer because there's a calculation involved beyond a simple addition or subtraction.

Again, these are if you're unsure because guessing is better than leaving it blank.

Any other “if you're unsure” or “tricks?”

@CNS Another trick is be careful of ultimate words in MCQ such as “always” or “all” or “none” when you have a theory question that involves I, II, III and such. I almost always eliminate those! “if unsure”

I almost always eliminate answers with a fancy tone and complicated language. “if unsure”

    Thanks

Good luck! Thank you. You gave me two good laughs while I'm in the library by myself and no one around except for an old lady at the desk. She's nice though.

I know the supporting services would be the $35,000 membership development and $55,000 promotional/fund raising brochures. But how exactly did they come up with program expenses of 245,000?

They freakin' included upscale linens and restaurant supplies as program services!!! (How the heck is this a program expense for golf stuff lol?!?!?!?!) I wondered why for 3 seconds then I decided to let it go; there are more stuff to care about other than this weird MCQ…. NFP is weird!!!

I just used good old fashioned elimination of two of the answers. Chances are, two of the answer choices don't make sense so I can easily ignore them. That's what has mostly helped me when I've taken the test in the past.

    FAR - 79

I have been on this journey off and on for over 10 years. I think it's about time that I wrap this up.
