    Anyone put there 2 weeks in and basically just sit there and stare because nobody wanted to give you work?

    @Dave

    Yup, I find myself in this situation right now. My boss usually stops by at my office to chat for a while, but now he doesn't lol.

    I basically stare at my computer all day and sometimes leave early if need be. I wish they will just tell me to take the rest of the days off, I can also decide not to show up for the days remaining, but I don't know if this will burn the bridge.

    Haha yea I've been on this site basically nonstop to fend off boredom. I've been studying a lot but that gets old after 8 hrs a day. Where are you off to, getting out of public?

    Nope, never been in public and I don't think I will ever be since it is too late for me. I'm moving between private industries.

    Are you getting out of public?

    Count me in too. I gave my notice 9/22, so my last day is this Friday. I have so much that they want me to get done but I am having a hard time getting motivated to do it. Ha ha. Hence, the reason I am reading this thread. Congrats to the rest of you that found new jobs too!

    I quit my job in May so that I could study full time. I gave my employer an entire month's notice and he completely flipped out. He said a months notice wasn't enough time for a small firm, that I was screwing him, and how disappointed he was in me lol. It's not like I was a senior/manager either. I was a junior accountant! Anyways, I worked for him for a year and a half, which, looking back now, was basically a waste of time because I can't even use him as a reference now.

    In this position now. Put my 2 weeks in on Friday. I still have things that need to get done, but not nearly as busy as before. I've been winding down my projects for the last couple of weeks in anticipation of a new position internally or externally. External worked out better so I'm out of here next Friday.

    @jcan9703, I think that 1 month notice is incredibly generous! I gave exactly 10 business days notice. No more, no less.

    Congrats on the move! I am in the middle of a conundrum myself in regards to notifying my employer of my resignation. I just received a January offer that I have accepted and I don't know if I should give the standard 10 business days or perhaps give more out of respect for my employer. They will need to replace me via a somewhat lengthy security clearance process, so part of me thinks being the nice guy here may lessen the blow. The other part of me is worried about being a lame duck for an entire month or more. I do fear a moderate amount of retribution as a result of my departure because of specific circumstances surrounding my current position (not bad, just details I prefer not to post).

    @juuustin – I would advise against giving a longer notice. I did the same thing a couple of years ago. I accepted a job several months in advance of my start date and tried to be the “nice” person and give my current employer notice well in advance (with the intention of helping to find & train my replacement, knowing that it would be a challenge since IT auditors are scarce in my area)…well, that backfired big time and when I gave my notice, they told me my last day would be in 2 weeks. Luckily I was able to push my start date up with the new company, but otherwise it would have been very tough those few months! Don't worry about what's best for your employer – worry about what's best for YOU.

    Karma did get my employer back and they spent over 6 months trying to find a replacement, and ended up hiring someone with no experience who is terrible at the job…

    Thanks for the advice, Jilly. I am going to assume you meant “advise against” in the first sentence! I had never thought of being forced out in 2 weeks like that. I definitely can't afford that right now. I appreciate the perspective!
