What are typical entry-level positions in private? I am aware A/P and A/R are typical entry-level positions, but what else? Accounting clerk? Staff accountant position where your work is reviewed by a superior? Thanks.

Inventory control accountant, staff accountant, and the ones you mentioned above. Another one that a lot of people don't think about is a marketing accountant. They manage marketing funds, co-op from vendors, rebates, etc. They may be listed as marketing analysts, but if it wants an accounting degree then it's really an accounting position that will probably be responsible for submitting journal entries.

Would starting as an accounting clerk hinder one's career? I am talking to one firm in town and they told me to get back to them in May. Other than that, I would like to get into construction accounting as cost accounting is what I am best at and enjoy the most. I am open to manufacturing too but it seems not too many positions open up. Where I currently go to school and plan on staying the area is growing quite a bit and there is a lot of construction going on so it seems in need. Plus I have seen a few construction accountant positions on indeed. Right now I am working 40 hours per week while going to school and I am really slow at reviewing information. My last test for my Government and Not-for-Profit class I went into the test having reviewed 1 of 4 chapters for the test and got a 64. (3 of the chapters I didn't even look at) This includes staying in on weekends to study and write papers. Anything audio I take in much better and and faster and that's the way it's been my whole life. I am seriously debating just focusing on exams that have audio slides and audio review as part of the preparation and taking the CMA part 1 in late February which would likely help with construction positions. Yeah, there might be a trade off for my grades but I already know my GPA both regular and accounting is going to be around a 2.8 at this point. Any thoughts?

If you're already working why not wait until you are finished with school and the CPA exam before you change. This way, your grades may not suffer and you can lean on the CPA credentials instead of putting so much on your plate. If construction or cost accounting is your interest, I am sure there will be plenty of positions open after you pass. Also try to get in a little higher position other than an acctg clerk because you might need the sign-off for experience. But really watch the over load.

    It begins with a 75

I agree with trying to get a better position than accounting clerk. I certainly will try for a better position. Right now, my job is not accounting related, it's just a job to pay the bills while I go to school. I did have an accounting-related position for 11 months that ended at the end of the summer. Here is where I would appreciate some guidance:

    * Would it be better to continue my current job and find a better accounting position at a later date or would it be better to find any accounting position upon graduation and work that job until I find a better one? The problem I have with the latter is that I don't want to screw anyone over and stay for 3 or 4 months then leave.

Also, I will be graduating with 147 credits and taking the final 3 the summer after graduation so that is part of the reason I am considering the CMA first. Part of the reason is because it is specific to the industries that I am interested in, and part of the reason is that I won't have 150 credits under my belt until August/September.

My accounting clerk sends out W-9s and tax exemption certificates, files, makes copies, etc. She doesn't get any accounting experience. It's all clerical. It won't help you on a resume unless you go in with the intention of assisting the staff auditors on other things like bank recs, etc. in hopes of moving into a staff accountant role.

Thanks for the info. Perhaps taking the 3 extra credits at school and then taking FAR in july after graduation would be better than taking part 1 of the CMA first
