The sign up process seems too simple to be true! Don’t get me wrong, I like simplicity but It just seems too easy. I am used to being drilled by higher education admission offices. I need 3 classes to qualify in Texas. Will the acctg classes taken at these extension universities count in Texas. I am allowed 5 classes via distance edu so I am good in that regard.

    Thanks

Ask the school and your SBOA, or you can play it risky and find out when your transcripts are reviewed. Your call!

Yes they are legit. Took live classes there to qualify for CA. Admission there is easy because it is not a degree program, many people take classes at extension for the CPE because they are affordable, provide quality learning and hassle free.

I took the live classes at UCB extension for all of my accounting units. Many of my classmates were doing the same to be able to sit for the CPA exam in CA.

    They are legit.

I took classes between May 2002 and June 2006, so they were all live classes. In general all my instructors were good/great there with the exception of one, Cost Accounting. All the students work full time and then drag themselves to a 6 PM 3-hour class. He would give us pop quizzes (Really? Didn't even have those in college) and purposfully give them at the end of class so if people left early they would automatically fail. Last I heard he was fired because so many students complained about him.

The classes are expensive, but worth it for the convenience.

How can the credit from extension classes be converted to semester credit?

A class in Ext. is 4 units, this equats to approx. 2.7 semester units. I would suggest to pick live classes if you can, cheaper and high quality professors. It could also serve as another venue for networking. Had lots of classmates who were CPAs or attorneys.

Don't expect to learn much from the half-ass instructors at UCLA extension. I have just finished all 12 required courses and have gotten A's and A+ in all classes taken. Online courses are even worse due to the lack of students participation and actual interaction between the instructors and students. It is merely a money making company established to cash in on the students who are in a predicament. (those who need to satisfy credits requirements but cannot afford quality and higher learning at a accredited university)

I would suggest taking the classes at a regular community college instead of paying 500+ for a course offered at UCLA or UCB extension. They are essentially a “gloried community college” that charge 3 times as much.

The extension classes are on the semester system, so I received full credit for all my units that I took at UCB Extension.

Yes, the units are accepted. I took about 20 accounting semester units at UCD Extension: 6 live and 2 online classes. I also took a UCB Extension course online. Yes, it's easy to apply, because it's a money-maker. Yes, the online courses require a lot more self-learning. The UCB Extension course (Taxation for Corporations and Other Flow-Through Entities) literally just required that I read through a huge textbook and take 5 (fairly difficult) tests. There was no online lecture component as my UCD Ext online courses had. I had a couple of “easy A” instructors, but most of them actually used their grading to encourage us to learn.

My UCD Ext instructors were not academics, and I appreciated that. They're respected CPAs with real-life experience. We learned the “textbook answers” vs. real life, in many circumstances. Also, I've now got them as senior-level contacts in various nearby public firms for when I soon attempt a career change.

I need to take a couple more accounting credits to get through the accounting credit requirements. It seems like they are a pretty good deal.

Would all of the classes on the link most likely qualify toward the minimum accounting credits? What classes have people taken and which ones are easy or hard. I am in Colorado so online classes are my only option

@Akkula I think all of them would count towards it. The required classes count towards the Accounting Units needed and the Business related electives would count towards the business units needed to meet the requirements. I know that the Accounting classes count for sure because I completed this program and it is how I became eligible. I only took one 4 unit accounting class during my undergrad at UCLA. Since my major was Math/Econ the business related unit requirement for this certificate was waived for me.

I may be biased having done my MBA from UC Berkeley. But, the classes are fine (it is one of the oldest universities in the country with a UG business program that is consistently ranked in the top 5). I have taken the classes myself and they count towards credits.

    Hope this helps.

    Has anyone taken this class:

MGMNT X 423.422 Ethics in Accounting

Is it pretty easy? Has it been accepted by your state board and were you able to transfer it to another school without issues?
