I just changed jobs and entered the coporate internal auditing world at a medium sized company. I’ve been here for about 2 months and thus far my experience has been lackluster to say the least. My boss is a good guy, but he doesn’t seem interested in training me how to do my job. I was given a canned audit program and basically no direction and told to do an audit on one of our segments. I have no prior auditing experience or experience within this industry. I ask questions, but he seems to lack the “teaching” skill.

I have been approached about another job opportunity to work for a publicly traded medium-ish company in internal audit. The industry is something that I am more familiar with and I’ve been told that there training program is top notch. What should I do? Current job is much more $, benefits are equal.

Either negotiate a higher salary or stay at current job unless it is a toxic environment that is stressing you out. Most jobs provide little actual training and you have to learn as you go.

Even if I'm not going to learn anything at this current job? I'm in my 20s, odds are I'm not going to retire from my current company.

I would take less money and make the move to the other company where the training will be much better. What's good about a job when you're doing a task, but don't really know why or what you're doing? Much better to learn as much as you can, from a solid mentor, while you are young.

If you've only been there 2 months, I'd maybe give it a little time and get a feel for things. Sounds like you haven't given it much of a chance. As @Scarlet said, training occurs over time; it's not instantaneous and you can't expect to get thrown into something at a high-level right away- trust me, you'd be too overwhelmed and wouldn't want to anyway.

“I've been told that there training program is top notch.”

By who? If you don’t know for sure, you could be in the same position after transitioning to the new job. Simply ask questions – don’t assume anything from either position. Be up-front with your current employer and prospective employer. For example, ask what additional training you are going to receive and if you feel you aren’t receiving any, ask for additional responsibility. But be careful what you wish for! As far as the prospective company, ask how people are trained, what the job is like, etc…typically what you’d want to do in an interview anyway, rather than just accepting a job and going in blind. Anytime I look back and wonder why I didn't receive a project, responsibility, etc, I ask myself, did they know I was looking forward to it or just assuming, did I make my intentions clear, etc..?

you should have an extremely good reason to move jobs after two months. your boss not spoon feeding you is not a good reason. whether or not you learn anything at your current job is about 90% on you.

plus the new job could suck at training you also, and have a job on your resume for a 2 month period looks really bad going forward. give it 1-2 years and put some effort into learning your job, then if you dont like it after 2 years you can move and it doesnt look as bad (2 years still looks bad if you make it a pattern)
