Thank you Jeff! I appreciated the shout out for my audit success with ninja mcq and book. I am working them for BEC right now, too! This time I do have flash cards because of that great deal back at Thanksgiving!

What happened to the Hiya button? No more personalized Hiya's? I thought “vote of thanks”was some weirdo lurking on the forum who never bothered to actually post. 🙂

I would have said your name “moniker nc” but I wasn't 100% sure that's how to pronounce it so I bailed 🙂

The forum is being weird…about to pull out what little hair remains.

    Hey Jeff,
I am commenting in reference to comments on being a CPA in industry and your discouragement of pursuing the license. The person that sent you the e-mail, did they say the weren't in the accounting/finance department of the corporation they worked for-so it isn't relevant to the person's role? The controller, CFO(mid 60's in age), and myself are licensed CPAs and I have always been a corporate accountant and a licensed CPA as of last year. It was heavily recognized in my current corporation via 30% salary increase, most for doing the same job and another $5k for some additional responsibility (again the controller emphasized the CPA when they easily could've kept me at the same pay)…as well as all CPE expenses and licensing fees paid for with a $1k allotment for ordinary CPA expenses…this license will help me get management/controllership leadership roles in the future. I must have misunderstood due to sleep deprecation, but were you advising against getting licensed if you only plan to work in industry?

I'm saying that it depends on what your goals are.

80 hour of CPE every 2 years, etc etc is a lot of hassle if you're going to be in industry.

I've worked for 2 public companies and the majority of the Accounting team didn't keep their licenses current once they left public.

    CPE gets old after awhile.

Lol I put depreciation instead of deprivation!-true sign of accountant + sleep deprivation! That is good advice and does depend on your goal, however, almost every job posting I see in accounting and finance say CPA preferred. Fortunately, in AZ you can bang that CPE out fairly quickly (and aren't limited to spreading it out over the 2 years) with self-study and can do them in a few days if you so chose to (CPE DEPOT). I'm in the process of of doing a 2015 FASB update course and i was amazed at how relevant it was to my position…containing info on discontinued ops and the abuse by management to stuff things there. I recently took on the responsibilities of recognizing revenue, which was also in the update. In terms of public, if your goal is to work in industry and never get to partner to sign off on the audit report, why even get certified then leave after a couple years? It seems you don't “need” the license at all for public either unless you want to make manager. It is still a post-grad credential, respected by most. Anyways, in case anyone was discouraged in pursing the license while they were in industry-don't be. It was supported by my company and all my CPA exam fees were paid for as well. As the controller said, it shows how much you care about the profession and rose to the “highest level” by getting certified. I agree it has to be relevant to the position…e.g. accounting or tax in industry. Aghhhhhh I need to not distract myself and get back to work so I can leave and get some sleeeeeeep!

I read “CPA Preferred” to mean that you've passed – not that you're licensed.

They figure that you're smart enough to pass and ambitious enough to endure the exam – you might make a good team member.

It's just a metric to weed people out.

Being licensed just means you took some arbitrary online CPE classes and wrote a check.

They want people who have a CPA certificate, not necessary an active permit to practice.
