Curious to see what people think is the better method. I just failed FAR and am playing on re-taking it in Novemeber. My study method has always been, lectures MCQs, outline books MCQs, more MCQ’s plus Gliem MCQs. I tend to just go through everything as fast and as many times as I can.

With FAR there is so much material i’m wondering the thoughts on taking a whole week on a section and really picking it apart as apposed to 2 or 3 sections in a week.

    REG - 63,74,70,81!!!
    FAR - 44,73, 81!!!!
    AUD - 51,81!
    BEC - 73,77!!

3 years later and I'm officially done. Never give up no matter what!

I tend to go for the less is more approach and study more thoroughly rather than doing as many MCQs as possible, but since there is so much material for FAR, you have to be careful about not getting too hung up on one concept and sacrificing other concepts because of it. You also need to go back and review past chapters regularly, or it is easy to forget what you did 2 weeks ago. For FAR, I went through everything at a broad sweep first, then closer to my test I went back through and started nailing the concepts that I didn't bother with the first time. So it's a combined approach.

    AUD 84 (1/9/14-Wiley books/TB + free materials)
FAR 83 (5/21/14-the above + NINJA 10 Pt Combo Lite)
    REG 84 (7/9/14-Wiley books/TB + NINJA Audio/FC/Notes)
    BEC 76 (10/5/14-Wiley books/TB + NINJA Audio/FC)

When I didn't pass FAR the first time, I did not waste my time re-watching the lectures. You already know the material, so it's time to revise it. I really studied the outlines hard, so I knew all the material while answering the MCQs. I starred the questions that I had trouble with and revisited them. I took practice quizzes over and over again.

Then I did a final review of my material and problematic questions. You need to give yourself ample time with FAR because cramming doesn't work.

How close were you to passing this time? For FAR, do a CRAM! I did a CRAM for all 4 sections but it was most helpful for FAR. It's another quick overview. Don't pass up *too many* sections because you're not understanding, but definitely pass up some. I didn't (and still) get pensions. That was a whole damn module (or chapter. They're modules with my course). I just kept thinking, how topical are defined benefit plans, REALLY? Yes, they exist but besides government workers, who has them. I wouldn't say I skipped it, but I didn't really make an effort to dive in and get into the details. Leases, bonds, EPS, etc – those are things that accountants deal with all the time over a broad range of industries.

    FAR - 87 2/18/14
    AUD - 84 4/2/14
    REG - 87 7/23/14
    BEC - 78 8/26/14

I'm finally an *official* CPA - TX

I usually prefer more detailed studying. The CPA exam is about being able to recall the information and being able to apply that information. Therefore a thorough understanding of the concepts is needed especially those that you have gotten wrong and allows you to concentrate on those areas that you are weak on. That is not to say that volume studying is bad because it does have it's advantages. There are questions on the CPA exams that are very similar to the CPA review courses, so being able to recognize them could really save a bit of time to solve them.
