Waiting for an offer at Big4

    Hello A71,

I interviewed with a Big4 (Chicago Office) through campus recruitment last Friday.

After researching the web and a71, it appears that those that received an offer knew the day of or after. Rarely did people hear back with offers after 2-14 days from the office interview.

HR said it will be 2 weeks for me to hear from them but today the Partner that interviewed responded to my thank you email (after 3 business days!). So does anyone think I will be receiving an offer or should I just keep applying away at jobs?

For every job offer I've gotten the longest I've waited was 2 days. Every job I've gotten I either had HR contact me the same day telling me that an offer was coming or I got an offer in the next day or two. Every time I had HR tell me that I would hear back in a week or two, I either never heard back or I got a rejection.

Now that I am in a management role I know that if you are a great candidate that everyone liked, you will be contacted right after the interview to get your feedback and to let you know that the company is interested. This is to 1) Not to lose you if you are actively interviewing and 2) to get your feedback on how you liked the firm and if this is something you want to pursue further.

Yes, even when we have other candidates waiting to be interviewed we will make an offer before we have even interviewed everyone. Have you ever been to an interview where the interviewers seem completely disinterested from the beginning? A likely scenario is that they are just going through the rounds as an offer has already been made to someone else. I've seen this happen countless times at my current company.

The “you will hear from us in 2 weeks” message is a standard message that HR will send candidates when the firm wants to continuing looking. Over half the time, HR will never bother following up again.

Believe me, if a firm wants you, you'll hear back immediately. The fact that the partner waited 3 days to respond to your thank you note says a lot. I wouldn't waste anymore time holding out. I've learned through many interviews that when you get this message to call it a dead end and move on to the next without giving it another thought.

FYI – when I interviewed for PwC 8 years ago, I got a call the next morning with an offer.

I interviewed with one Big 4 on a Friday and they called me with an offer on Monday.

Another Big 4 waited about a week to give me an offer and no one responded to my thank you email.

And the other one waited about 2 weeks to give me an offer but the partner responded to my thank you email a week after I sent it.

Therefore, it definitely varies but don't lose hope yet. Keep applying, though.

If you already passed your CPA I think you will get the job. That is what they look for, but it wouldn't hurt to keep applying, try the top 10 like BDOs or Grant Thornton.

I've had offers from two Big 4s, and I received both within 24 hours. From my experience, they do not wait.

On to the next one. Don't wait around to hear back from any employer. Interview the best you can and then keep applying. Modify interview skills if needed and keep after it. I remember a few years back when I had 7 interviews and 7 rejection emails all within 2 weeks. Man that was devastating.

For Deloitte, I got my offer half an hour after my interview. For EY I got an offer on site right after my interview. But be positive, one of my friend got an offer from one of the big4 after a few weeks.

So…did you go for Deloitte or EY? Why?

I chose Deloitte at the end. I think all of the big4s are great, but I feel more connected with the professionals at Deloitte. And Deloitte has the best employee benefit among big4s (in SF).
