What am I doing wrong?

I am using Roger. I have NINJA 10pt combo also, but haven’t even had the time to touch it.

It is taking me like an hour to get through a 15min Roger lecture. Then before I know it 3 hours of study time has passed and I’ve made barely any progress. For the amount of time I have already sat down to watch the Roger lectures, I should have completed all the videos a long time ago, but I just started chapter 10 of 32 and I am like 6-8 weeks in. Aside from it taking me an hour to get through a 15 min lecture, I can’t tell you a single thing I have learned in these 6-8 weeks.

Starting to wish I would have started easy first, rather than hardest first just so I can build some confidence and get into a groove.

I think you are digging too deep – the way you are going you won't remember the stuff you learn in week 1 come week 8.

I think we can help if we know how you learn/retain material the best? Also, I wish I would of stuck with FAR first…..with time creeping up – it is nerve racking

Not sure what you mean by digging too deep. I think it is the opposite. Feels like I am not putting enough effort into it. I set aside a few hours to study and before I know it, 3 hours has passed and i barely completed a few 20 min video lectures and retained nothing.

lol and Idk how I retain information the best. If I had that answer, I'd be doing that and wouldn't be struggling and on here asking for help.

It took me 2 years to figure out how I learn best 🙂

digging too deep- IE you are focusing on one chapter for too long. You need to get the broad overview as FAR so much material and if you have time you can get to the little details

IE – Pensions – know them – but don't focus on every regulation or practice behind them.

Do you retain by watching videos? listening? or hands on – making mistakes and learning from what you did? (could be a practice problem, etc) Most ppl have a combo of these 3 styles

Watch the videos. No notes just watch. All per section. A 15 minute video should take 15 minutes. It sounds like you must be pausing for notes or rewatching. After video, read book and take notes. Then do MC and SIM practice. Afterwards if you need a refresher rewatching the videos necessary.

Disclaimer, I don't have Roger so there may be other items used to study I am unsure of.

Ya I get what you mean by digging to deep, but I still think it is the opposite with me. It is not like I am trying to learn every detail. It is just that I simply sit down in front of my laptop, hit play on a 20 min video and 1 hr later I am just finishing up and i learned nothing. It is like I zoned out. And I simply cannot sit in front of the video and hit play and watch it all the way through and retain anything. So, I feel like I have to pause here and there and take notes. I can't even take notes while listening to the lecture because then I'd miss what he is saying. But hey, if you sit me in front of a history documentary or a sports documentary, I'd be able to recite the whole thing lol.

And i do have the 10 pt combo. I really do want to just sit down and do multiple choice question after question but I don't want to get into the habit of just memorizing the questions and I feel like if I don't have a solid understanding of the topic then I am just wasting those questions and not truly testing myself.

Videos should be more of an overview of the Unit.

If you are taking that long, you are going into it too much.

Working the mcq's and sims is where you will be learning the materials the most. That's where you should really focus on. Like cpagal said, a 15-20 minute should be only 15-20 minutes.

So basically sit in front of the video with no notepad or anything and just hit play?

If that is the case then I am wasting valuable time all together by even watching the videos. I retain nothing from them. That is why I have the urge to take notes while watching them. I feel like that would help me reinforce what he is saying. If it is recommended that I just watch it through without any type of notes, then I am think I should just skip the videos and learn from the text he provides. And judging by the size of his FAR book, it is going to take me a year to get through it.

I am definitely a visual person. So, when he is walking through the calculations of problems or the flow of T accounts, then ya that sticks, but when he is just standing there and talking about concepts, I retain nothing.

FAR has an enormous amount of materials. The videos only provide a miniscule fraction of what you need to learn.

It's those mcq's and sims that will help you learn the materials and show you how to apply it through a variety of situations.

I get that, but I feel you need a general understanding of the material to even begin the mcq. Or else you are just wasting them.

So, if the video provides just a minuscule of the material we need to learn, and we truly learn by working mcq's and sims, then basically videos need to be cut out all together, right? So when you go into the mcq's knowing very little of the material, how do you do the problems without getting into the mode of memorizing the answers?

I cant. I need the underlying “why” behind everything. For me the videos would defiantly benefit me and I am actually thinking of purchasing the FAR videos from Roger to supplement my Gleim.

Don't get me wrong, his videos are great. I just zone out. It is me, not him. I love the way he explains calculations and the flow of the T accounts and other topics. But I retain zero concepts. That is why I take notes. I will listen and then when something important comes up, I pause and take notes. People here are saying just watch the lecture all the way through without stopping and taking notes. That just doesn't work for me. I retain nothing from just sitting there and listening. Therefore, it seems like watching the videos all together is just a waste.

It sounds like you don't retain by watching videos and you are wasting your time? Is that a fair assessment of my skimming? 🙂
