What am I missing here?

Let me keep this short ..I passed three papers by last August ( AUD & BEC right away and REG times two) and am not able to get through FAR ( 69,73,74,73,69). I’ve just lost REG and have to sit for FAR and REG before Oct end. Having come so close the last few times in FAR I just don’t feel like giving up. At the same time I don’t know what else to do to get through FAR. I am using Becker, Wiley & Ninja notes. My results show that my MCQ’s are strong and SIMS weak. How do I tackle this beast? What am I missing here? While the first few times, I got essays on topics I was unaware of..last time I prepared for ALL the topics. Any suggestions?

    REG - 1/12: 77 (DONE!)
    BEC - 8/12: 78 (DONE!)
    AUD - 8/12 : 81 (DONE!)
    FAR - 63,73,74 ( RETEST) 8/13: Please god!!

That really stinks. And you should definitely not give up. The simulations are what killed me too. I would recommend learning how to use the AL to your advantage. I never learned how because I felt like I should learn the material before working on the AL but I have heard so many stories of people finding really similar samples in the AL and using it to answer the question. If you feel like you have a good grasp on the material then really try to work on that. I was planning to do that if I had to retake it a third time. The AICPA has the option for you to use the full AL for 6 months for free if you are a cpa exam candidate. https://www.aicpa.org/BecomeACPA/CPAExam/ForCandidates/HowToPrepare/Pages/literature.aspx

    Good luck!

Don't give up. It is pretty much a consensus among everyone who has taken the exam that FAR is the hardest. I also had difficulty with the simulations. The advice that I can offer to you is to understand the concepts behind the answers and not just the answer. If you have a good understanding of the accounting concepts, then you can apply them to questions that you may not have seen before. In each part of the exam that I have taken, there has always been at least 1-3 simulation questions that I have never seen before. when you get to those questions, apply the GAAP principles that you know already to the question and you have a good chance of being right.

My other big piece of advice during the test is to make sure that you give yourself more than enough time with the simulations. Some people have said to leave at least 15 min for each simulation but I needed more than that. I ended up using at least 20-25 min for each simulation. This gave me extra time to really think through the simulations which I had never seen before and not just put down the first answer that came to mind. This of course means that you may have to spend less time with the MC questions. Everybody is different, but this is what worked for me.
