I took Bec twice and got a 74 and 72. I feel like Becker is horrible in preparing for this exam. Has anyone passed Bec for the first time? And which review course did you take?? Thanks.

offlineMemberI passed BEC the first time using Yaeger Home Study. Cindy prepared me very well for the exam. One of the sick and complicated problems that Cindy reviewed was on the exam. No other BEC course mentioned that particular question!
After I used Yaeger Home Study ($355), I also used Bob Monette (Bisk) Hot Spot on Cost Accounting, and Kaplan (free) flash cards to memorize IT terms. I also had Gleim Test Prep to help me with more multiple choice questions on my weak areas.
I thought that Becker was weak in BEC. I also thought that Becker's other three courses were better than BEC.
I was impressed with Kaplan's flash cards; there are 117 flash cards on IT! Becker has no where near that number of flash cards for IT. You have to memorize ALL of the IT definitions, and flash cards are the way to go for IT.
Your emphasis on studying should be in this order, according to Cindy at Yaeger:
1. Business Structure
2. IT
3. Finance
4. Cost Accounting
5. EconomicsYou are within spitting distance of passing BEC. Call Yaeger and work out a study plan. What were your weak areas, according to your AICPA report?

Kaplan was offering the free BEC course when I was studying for BEC. Call Kaplan to see if they are still offering the free course, and report back to the other CPA candidates on this forum. What I liked about Kaplan were the flashcards and the CD that went along with the flash cards, especially for IT.
However, Yaeger with Cindy is still the best BEC course, unlike the Becker's very, very expensive BEC course.

offlineMemberI am currently using Kaplan and got an 86 the first time around... I never used the flashcards... Just the questions in the back of the book and the online test questions.. nothing more. Kaplan just has tons of questions you can practice with and that allows you to get the concepts instead of just reading over and over again and hoping you get the concepts.

offlineMemberI don't know why everyone is so hard on Becker for BEC. I also don't know why everyone fails BEC so many times as I thought it was one of the easier exams, and I just nailed it my first shot with a respectable score. I used Becker thoroughly and supplemented with about half of the Wiley test bank questions (were not all that helpful) and some questions off cpareviewforfree.com. I was hit with a lot of topics that were verbatim from Becker's material. I felt like Becker covered all the material quite well, especially the financial management and cost accounting. I've seen many others use Becker for BEC with high scores as well. If you already have it and are unsure about it, just go ahead with it, hit it hard, and trust it. It will work if you put in the time and cover all the material.

offlineMemberI think the reason that people see BEC as "hard" and difficult to pass is because they don't take it seriously. They look at the small amount of material and the fact that it does not contain simulations and automatically assume that it will be a walk in the park. That is a grave mistake!

offlineMember@ GSU Josh - Everyone has different ways that they learn and retain info; Becker is not for everyone...Yaeger is not for everyone. I personally thought Becker did an awful job with BEC, but good with the rest. Nothing on my exam the 1st time around looked familiar after studying with Becker. After using Yaeger I didn't have any surprises.
@ 75 CPA - I think a lot of people do under estimate BEC; however, I think it is realized after the 1st failing score. I gave my 2nd attempt more than I had to offer. I studied with Yaeger for 40 hours a week for 3 weeks...double what I studied with Becker for BEC. And I work full time, 40+ hours a week. I lived in the library and the conference room at my office...I practically had my mail delivered there. I did everything that Cindy Simpson and the rest of the Yaeger group told me to do, and then some. It apparently was not enough.
@ BEC I said so - to answer your question, it sounds like Becker is not working for you. Don't try to do it again and get an almost there score. I highly recommend Yaeger for BEC. Although it wasn't enough in my case, maybe I just needed an extra week or so. Good luck!

offlineMemberI passed BEC the first time with a lot less studying than I thought I'd need. The key for me I think was going to a liberal arts school and having taken a ton of economics and finance courses (I am a triple-major in accounting, finance, and economics).
I used Becker and thought that it would be deficient. I know that the cost accounting section, in particular, would have been extremely challenging to follow for someone who had never taken cost accounting (since it is an elective at some colleges, including where I go). I even found some of the sections incredibly hard to pick back up on (e.g. overhead variances) after having not done a single day of cost accounting in the two and a half years since I took the course. Luckily for me, my exam was heavily weighted in subject areas where I was strong. Maybe I just got lucky - I really don't know. However, other than a few pretest questions (which seemed more appropriate for another section, to be honest), I thought Becker covered all the topics sufficiently. Unlike some, I didn't get any off the wall questions in IT (in fact, mine were so easy, I could hardly believe they were even asking them).
Although I've never tried it, it sounds like Yaeger might be worth a shot if you've never had exposure to the concepts (other than in CPA exam review) and Becker isn't working for you. However, there were some taxation and law concepts I never had before when I was studying for REG, but I read the material in Becker, studied, and studied some more and pulled off a 96 on the exam.
Took the exam for Alaska, working in West Virginia, and used Becker
REG - 96 (7/24/10), BEC - 93 (8/21/10), AUD - 99 (2/26/11), FAR 95 (5/31/11). DONE!

You are within spitting distance of passing BEC. I think that the next step is working on your weak areas. Gleim Online, which includes Gleim Test Prep, is the best tool for that purpose.
Take Gleim's Diagnostic Test, which is available with Gleim's Online version. Then write down your scores for each section of BEC, along with the scores from your two BEC exams. Gleim will help you to narrow down your weakest areas to a few questions! Gleim Online also has a personal counselor available with their Online version.
