What happens next after you accept offer? ( Need Specifics–> Unique Situation)

    Hey guys,

I have a job offer from one of the Big 4. I told them I am eligible to work in United States and do not require work sponsorship. Truth is I lied but by the time I start in Fall 2015 I would be eligible to work in United States. I am not an international student / candidate per se but I don’t have much of a legal status in country as my previous international student status is being converted to a Legal Permanent Resident.

So here’s my question: When exactly is the background check? In my brochure it says around 2 months before your start date… What documents ( not information) would I have to provide for background? Also when the background comes back do you think recruiter would find out my Social is of a non citizen? In my brochure it says bring legal citizenship or work-permitting documents on the first day of your work i.e Fall 2015…Do you think the recruiter would check in between? As I pointed out earlier I marked the boxes saying I am authorized to work in U.S without the need for work visa.

They will probably run the background check before you start, you know because that's the best way, then see you lied on application that you signed and said to be true. Why do you think that was a good idea? Did you think they would have an oversight and you would be all good? If they wait then see that you filed all that paperwork between the acceptance and start date, then it will still look kind of shady.

I say this with all due respect. Between this situation and your earlier posts about the reasons you can't obtain transcripts you may want to consider another profession. We all make mistakes but you seem to be more focused on finding loopholes than correcting anything. Your best bet is to call the recruiter now and make it right

I agree with mia11692. Why would you lie in first place to begin with? Especially big4 offers work visa and they go really behind to get the talent they need. If I were you – I would call the recruiter make it clear, and just go from there. Also, there are no slacks offered by any State CPA boards when it comes to getting your transcripts. Schools here have an registrar office and they send out the official transcripts to the requesting party or organization. Even I have my BBA from India, and did about 75 credits in the U.S University, and everything worked out just fine. It will look really bad if they find out later from their background check that you didn't disclose.

And if the reason you couldn't get your transcripts hasn't changed, you are aware that will come up on a credit report and could cost you the offer you have? Not all credit issues are deal breakers but you have to show you're doing something about it. And if you've listed the US school but they are unable to confirm your credits there I'd be much more worried about that. The background check looks at your credit, the credentials you've listed and any criminal history.

All the employer needs is your social security # and your consent (which you may have already given during the application process in which case they can check anytime they please.). As I said we ALL make dumb mistakes and the best way to overcome them is with honesty.

Yoboy – considering that you post about having bad debts at an American university that you don't want to pay and now about lying on employment forms, I'm surprised you want to be a CPA. You should go back to whatever country you're from and leave accounting jobs in the US for people who are honest and ethical.

I don't think its cool to even suggest OP leave the country, but he or she has quite a road ahead to be able to work at a Big 4, seems like multiple glaring issues to resolve and it CAN be done, but its not going to be easy or comfortable. Not to mention are you planning to use the offer letter to get your green card? If so, that's a pretty big risk to take as well because I believe they will verify that with the employer who you told you are already authorized to work in the US, and I for one would either keep looking for another job and/or consult with an immigration attorney. The background check ~2 mos before your start date will very likely show your current residency status.
