I work for an NPO and our COO, he was promoted from CFO about 5 years ago, is a former lobbyist! Crazy, huh? He's just super smart… Definitely has a handle on the big financial picture, but no input on the details.

eta: he has a PoliSci degree…

I think this really depends on the size of the firm; but I think a general F500 CFO will have a CPA, with some Big4 experience or IB role and an MBA from a top tier.

5 years as a bond trader, then 12 years as a VP of Finance/CFO in the real estate industry, before he moved to my company, an Inc. 500 retailer. He is not a CPA, and has mentioned that he likes to have a strong controller and other CPAs he can trust to handle the accounting side for him, so he can focus on finance.

    FAR - 84 (08/25/14)

Big 4 Audit => Assistant Controller => Controller => VP of Finance for a Division => CFO

That is the path the CFO for my company took.

CFO of the company where I work was never a CPA or worked in IB or any financial services job for that matter. He is a PhD in Physics. He worked for McKinsey Consulting for a while. Was offered a job at this company and became CFO after a couple of years. No MBA or any type of business degree.
