What is your reason for embarking on the CPA? What is the goal in passing the exams? I am sometimes demotivated and I sometimes have trouble understanding why am I putting myself through this. So, what is your WHY?

My “why” at this point is just to finish what I started. I'm not a quitter and the only reason I'm still doing this is have something nice on the resume. I actually don't intend on having an accounting job for long, as there are so many other things I've since realized I'd rather be doing. During this process I often questioned why I'm even doing it then…but now I see the finish line in sight, and it's pretty satisfying. So even if for nothing else, being able to say I accomplished this is worth something to me.

for me the question is, why not? i have to have a goal. right now this is it. it is good to work towards something. i like things that make me try and when done, i feel i have accomplished something or i have discovered a limit to what i can do. both are very helpful. plus i have a lot of time left to work and live. the exam is one part of this journey. accounting is a practice that takes time and experience to master. one day, i may try capitalization. who knows? i may get really good at that and give up all of this.

When I was in college, many of my accounting professors recommended that we should take the CPA exam as soon as possible after we graduated college, and to work for a big 4 CPA firm for 2 years first before going into industry.

I didn't follow their advice. I didn't want to go into public accounting before because I didn't want the stress that comes with it, and I didn't want to work overtime. I don't regret my decision though, because my extra free time allowed me to pursue other hobbies that I like to do.

I have 6 years of Accounts Payable experience, and my goal is to work my way up in the industry to become a senior accountant in the future.

For the past year, I have applied to many industry accounting jobs in Houston, and I barely got any response. I got about 2 phone interviews, and that was it. I think my lack of accounting experience outside of Accounts Payable limits my qualifications for many jobs.

So now I am taking my accounting professors' advice. I plan to pursue my CPA certification, and then apply to work at the big 4 CPA firms. I want to get 2 years of big 4 experience, and then go back into industry accounting afterwards.

I started the process when I was having trouble finding work but I ultimately ended up working in government at a job I'm happy at. When I got the job I had passed FAR and BEC already and there are no CPA's here to grant me the license so I have doubts if I'll ever get the required work experience or even NEED the license to begin with. The reasons I'm finishing up the exams are:

1) for my own personal satisfaction. I didn't do AMAZING at accounting in college so I just wanna prove to myself I can learn this stuff.It's also a confidence booster. When I feel challenged I can just think to myself “come on. You passed FAR. You can handle this too.”

2) I want the tests passed for job security in case I want to go into public or work under a CPA later. I also learned I can become licensed in another state and just list it on my resume that way so I may even do that.

3) I feel like I would really regret leaving this unfinished and letting my exam credits expire.

4) The knowledge from REG might be helpful for taxes. Or at least helping me understand the basics. I remember nothing from my tax classes.

5) It's always good to keep your mind challenged. I want to be a lifelong learner. As soon as I'm done with this I'm moving on to another subject like a science field. Also, I need to pass a government promotion test to get promoted when the time comes so I'm more than mentally fit enough for that at the moment.

Not having a degree was one of my biggest regrets in life, so I decided to change that for myself. I love school, so I just kept going and here I am. I can’t really say why I’m punishing myself like this, but I love the challenge and I aspire to be a life-long learner. 😉

Oh- and the 3 infmaous letters. I WANT THOSE LETTERS!! Haha

was in land development in Chicago metro area and then housing bubble hit. I figured having a certification like cpa would provide stability and something to always fall back on so at nearly 40 y/o, I went back and got the license. Unfortunately, it came with a massive pay cut.
