I took FAR twice and I am very disappointed by the results. I did much worse on the second time . I did write down the notes and worked on numerous multiple choice questions . I don’t know how to study for these exams anymore. Any tips on how much time to spend on one section and how to prepare , and any test taking tips?

The key to passing the exam is knowing everything well in your CPA review book and doing every multiple choice question in your review program at least twice.

I spoke to an ancient wise man who sent me on a mushroom induced journey through an ancient forest to find the key to passing the CPA exam. A talking spider monkey told me to throw the last of my drinking water in the dirt to find what I was looking for. So I followed his instructions and the following message appeared in the soil:

"Do 5000 multiple choice questions for each section"

You have not studied enough until your going over the material in your head at all time of the day, including before sleeping, waking up, showering, etc. Seriously! Also you should be doing the MCQ's until you start remembering the answers. The goal isn't to remember the answers, but to learn the concept and apply it any way the examiners throw it at you. Worked for me.

Haven't even taken one yet, so I dont really know myself. Generally speaking, when working on my study plan I was insistant on tailoring it to my learning specific learning style. What works for some won't work for others, it's important to know how you best retain information, how your short term/long term memory is, which topics you come into the exam in with a strength and where your weaknesses are so you can allocate what precious little study time you have accordingly.

For example, I'm working on FAR and my short term memory is GREAT but it's really really short. So it's easy for me to memorize, but it goes away really quickly when I do. One adjustment I made for myself; I immediately cut out all of the topics I classified as memorization (IFRS, The conceptual framework, Pensions, some of the consolidations stuff etc) and haven't even looked at them. In the final week before my exam, when I'm working on memorizing all of the tiny details that still aren't sticking at that point, Ill throw in that stuff and hopefully that will get me through. Why waste time learning something 5 weeks out that I know won't be there on exam day? That's the sort of stuff you should think about (if you haven't already)…good luck to you and everybody else as we close in on the Q2 window!!

    MBA,CMA,CPA, CFF?, ABV?

Getting really, really, really mad helped me. I was more focused and I was able to read the questions correctly. Don't let this exam get you down. Get back up and get pissed!!
