What's YOUR Greatest Weakness?

During interviews, what do YOU say when asked “what’s your greatest weakness?”

I haven’t figured out the best way to answer this. I usually go with the perfectionist route- obsessed over making things perfect. It’s a true statement for me, but I wonder if I should say something else. What do recruiters want to hear?

I can be a bit shy. But that's why I forced myself to be involved in leadership roles in university. I also worked as a waiter interacting with people. Blah blah blah….

It's a flaw that isn't that bad if it's true. And I mentioned how I worked on it and how it doesn't hold me back.

Every time I get asked this question, I just use some variation of the experience answer. “Though I have a wide range of experiences in blah blah blah, I have not had the opportunity to work extensively in <new job function>. That is why I am so excited about this opportunity, because I look forward to gaining experience…blah blah.”

It's a trite answer, but it's a question intended to get you to trash yourself or say something stupid. Best to just give a simple answer.

When I started my first accounting internship, it was the first time where I had to report to several seniors and partners. As such, I tend to stretch myself thin by taking on a lot of tasks and did not account for the time to complete them. However, with time, I learned to prioritize the tasks by asking the partners and seniors whether each project of theirs had a more urgent deadline. Eventually, I was able to prioritize my tasks and complete my projects in a more efficient manner.

The trick is to speak about a weakness and then show how you've been able to overcome it. The perfectionist is kind of a stretch, since it almost borders on cockiness (IMHO). But if it works for you, use it.

They want to know if you can identify a problem, take the initiative to solve it, and quantify the results. They don't actually care what your weakness is, just that its more difficult to identify a problem when its your own than someone elses.

Don't use perfectionist, everyone contends that about themselves and its not a “weakness” its a personality trait.HOW has perfectionism been a problem for you, specifically?

Here's a better answer “Although my peers and supervisors have always been pleased with my ability to meet deadlines, I always feel like I spend too much time reviewing my work often as much time as the prep took. I was able to build a macro in excel that reduced the time it took me to reconcile the bank account by 20 minutes each month and provide me the assurance that nothing was missed by highlighting and subtotaling the outstanding items and tying that back to the reconciling items in my accounting software. The best news is the macro takes less than five seconds to run.”

There, you covered yourself by stating off the bat nobody had complained about how long you take to review. it was a self perceived flaw. However you were aware enough to know that addressing it would benefit your employer. Throw in some cool excel skill that helped to overcome it and you've got a practically perfect answer to the question.

I've used the “perfectionist” answer before, but more from a perspective of not being able to let tiny, immaterial issues go, so projects can take me longer to complete than they really should.

More often than not, I used a “lack of focus” answer. Like others have said though, I also follow up with ways that I've learned to mitigate the issue. It's something that's always been there and likely always will be, but I've learned to live with it and work with it, so it's not as much of an issue as it used to be.

I have always hated the perfectionist answer but that's the best spin on it I've seen.

Overall, I think this question is just a quick trap for anyone dumb enough to say a true horrible flaw, which probably happens from time to time. Answering the question properly is like showing up professionally dressed to the interview. It won't get you the job in itself but it keeps you in the running.
