What's your reason for not giving up?

Nobody likes this exam, especially the drawn out process. However, you fail when you stop trying, not when you have given it your all and pick yourself back up over and over again.

I want to make a thread of our reasons why we aren’t giving in – as a reminder to ourselves and each other that we are all successful for even coming this far in our careers.

    For me personally,

    – I made this promise to myself and my family and friends have my word. Quitting would break my heart and theirs too.

    – I really, really, really am looking forward to the relief when I see my passing score.

    – Not taking the exam would mean potentially losing my job…and I’m no loser.

    – I have to prove this to myself. I was always a B/C accounting student and there were times where I thought I wasn’t smart enough and wanted to change my major…but I didn’t. If I give up I am just telling myself that I am not smart enough for this. I have never a typical accounting student, or extremely interested in it, but I am smart enough to make myself into one.

    Reasons:

    1. I have nothing better to do

    2. I have the money to pay for exam fees/review course

    3. I always want to be “the best” at anything I do

    4. I want to make a BUCK!!!!!!! lol

    5. I want a BMW/Audi

    6. I just want to see if I get any sort of special powers when I finally pass all 4 sections (like Goku-Dragon Ball) lol

    1. It will always hang over me until I pass it.

    2. To get the credential – good to have in public or private.

    3. Invested too much time/$$ to quit now.

    4. Some grad schools don't require GMAT if you're a CPA.

    5. Participating in a solitary confinment study for an indefinite period of time, i.e. duration of cpa studies.

Because I want to prove that I can do ANYTHING if I work hard enough.

Because I am secretly vain and want a bunch of little acronyms next to my name that not very many other people have. Also, to make my parents/family proud.

    Things that kept me motivated:

    1. $$$

    2. Pride

    Why I didnt give up:

    1. Every time I failed I thought “Well I can't quit now or all the time and money I've put in so far will be a complete waste”

    2. I didn't want to regret not finishing when I was older and had kids/more responsibilities

    3. I wanted to prove to myself that I was able to do it

    4. Wanted to prove to others/coworkers I could do it

    5. Who doesn't want letters after their name 😉 haha

    6. Wanted to have something my well off/pretty intelligent brother-in-law wants but doesnt have. hehe

    Here's my list:

    1. I quit college when I was younger and broke my grandmothers heart. She wanted one of her grandchildren to get a college education. I finally did it but she had passed away before I got my degree. Now I know she's watching from heaven and quitting would be letting her down again.

    2. Because I want to teach my son that not everything in life is easy, sometimes you have to work for it. And that just because you don't succeed the first time doesn't mean quitting is an option.

    3. To help people.

    4. For my Great Aunt who got a degree in Accounting after WWII and went on to get a Masters in Accounting in 1954. She was told when she went to apply for the CPA exam that “Women really don't need to take that test” and “Honey you need Mrs. in front of your name, not CPA behind it”.

    5. Because I don't set fire to money and quitting now would be the same as putting about $10,000 in a hole and lighting it up!

@kricket – I hope your Aunt kicked their butt!!

Only keeptrying knows this about me. I started taking this test back in 2004 because I was required for my job. I didn't study and because I didn't pay for the tests I didn't care. I failed multiple times but didn't care. I got a new job and stopped taking the tests. About a year later I realized I was a lazy, quitter. I have never been a lazy, quitter ever in my life. I got pissed off at myself. I finally decided to start going for this…seriously. What keeps me motivated?

    I am not a quitter

I want to prove to myself and all those that doubt me that I am smart enough to do this

    I want the big bucks!

I want pride in myself and for my family to be proud of me

I am too stubborn to let a stupid test defeat me!

Because I want to be proud of myself and accomplish something in my life. If there's one thing in life I know I can succeed in, it's this!

akb9874 – No, they never let her sit for the exam. But that was a long time ago and we have come a long way! Whenever I wish I had never gotten on this train ride through hell, I think of the fact that she COULDN'T get on it and it ticks me off and makes me want it even more!
