When are final grades asked for prior to internship?

Title^^ With an internship in the summer, are final grades asked for on a semesterly basis? Or just prior to the start?

For our interns, we don't ask for proof of grades. Just a resume and an interview. We also might talk to their accounting professor(s) prior to hiring them.
