When college doesnt teach what the review courses do…

Am prepping for the FAR Exam, and I just watched the lectures to the Acquisition Method in Becker.

At the end of the lectures, there’s a little video where Gearty says, “Remember that the acquisition method and consolidations are a full semester course at some schools…”

This following a 3 hour lecture.

But he goes on to say, “We think we have prepared you for the CPA exam” with respect to the Acquisition method.

He’s actually addressing a good point.

I sense gaps in what I learned in my college courses, and the Acquisition Method is one of them.

When these gaps occur – should one get worried? Or are the courses generally enough to cover everything? And, specifically, will Becker’s review of the Acquisition Method be enough?

I am thinking of calling some of my old Profs to see if I can get some help with it.

    Thanks.

It will be different for everyone. I took an Intro to Financial Accounting class and that was all. Becker more than prepared me for FAR. Only you will be able to assess your comfort level with the material.

I wouldn't worry about it. BECKER is enough.

Although IF you majored in accounting, you should have learned all about consolidations in your advanced accounting class, in which they cover the acquisition method.

Personally, usually when someone says there are “gaps” it is because they forget. My suspicion is if you are an accounting major, and you go back and look at your old college textbooks/exams, you'll discover that you did in fact spend quite a bit of time covering the subject.

If you are an accounting major, the very large majority of problem/calculation based material you learn in FAR is not only taught in your college courses but is taught at a level much deeper than Becker ever goes (although most accounting curriculum does not include not-for-profit or govt accounting). I myself, completely forgot how to do consolidations, pensions, and a multitude of other subjects from school and still pulled out a score in the high-80's by starting over from scratch with Becker.

As long as you put in enough time, the review courses are more than enough. I never once took a course in Government / Nonprofit accounting when I was in school. That said, using Becker I was able to learn it well enough for the exam in about two weeks. I honestly think the Becker material explains a lot of the financial accounting concepts in a FAR (see what I did there?) less confusing way than my Intermediate Accounting professors / textbook did.

    BEC - 90 PASSED
    FAR - 84 PASSED
    AUD - 93 PASSED
    REG - 84 PASSED

    I DID IT!!!!

    Using Becker Self-Study
