When to start applying

I am graduating in december. I look on many jobs sites everyday, careerbuilder, indeed, glassdoor writing down companies that have positions open (right now) that I can go back to their website and start applying as it gets closer to December. When exactly should I start to apply? I graduate December 13th. My professors tell us to apply beginning of August but I feel like companies are looking for someone they could hire within a month.

Do you have any advice or similiar experience? Especially since I am graduating in Dec and not many people do then so not much advice out there.

My firm is already interviewing for January positions this week and next week! I would say apply as soon as possible.

CPAin14: Ths is highly position dependant. If you are looking into regular everyday jobs, even entry level, than yes most comanies are looking to hire within a month because they generally cannot afford to be short handed for three or four months. However, if these positions are with companies that hire a lot of people right out of college, for example for management training programs and the such (GE, Disney and the rest of the Fortune 100 love those things), they usually like to hire really early and usually plan to start around graudation windows. They usually can wait because although programs like this are critical to the future of the company, they usually are not filling an immediate need; thus nobody is short handed if they hold the position for a few months. If you are looking the big 4 route, somebody else would be much better qualified to answer your question; I know they hire big time after the May graudate period, not sure if they do the same after the December graduation period. Good Luck!

It's a mistake to ignore what your professors are telling you. They probably have a better understanding of the general recruiting season at your university than you do. Does your university have a career services? If so, definitely use it.

The worst that happens if you apply too early is you're told that it's too early and to re-apply later. The worst that happens if you apply too late is that you miss the boat and don't get interviews.

Certainly, the public accounting recruiting season for entry level positions starts August-September.

i go to a smaller to mid sized university in a rural area, there are no big public accounting firms. Most of the “accounting” here is book keeping. I didn't go to college to get paid $8 to keep books. That being said, our professors also told us we would have to relocate to find something worthy. Down to the Carolinas or to Washington DC. My main job search is in Charlotte, I would like to go corporate. I have an internship already in a corporation and I loved it, they had 10 staff accountants (it was a growing company). I think my best bet will be getting in contact with a recruiter.
