When to throw in the towel

So I’m in a frustrating predicament.

I work in the industry as an accountant. I have little desire to work in public. After finishing my MBA in 2012 I figured I’d go for my CPA. Mostly because I like staying busy and to stay competitive. This is something I have wanted to do since I took my first accounting class in high school.

From April 2013-February 2014 I passed 3 sections of the CPA exam. Only FAR was outstanding. From February 2014-November I studied for FAR and failed. Twice. The last time I failed FAR with a 74 and I lost credit for BEC. Being so close, and losing credit for a past section completely ruined my holidays.

I retook FAR in January (am waiting on my score) but I don’t feel super confident. Definitely marginally passing or failing. I am studying to retake BEC, which shouldn’t be too bad. If I don’t pass both FAR and BEC by February 2015, I lose credit for REG. This would put me almost back at square one (well I would have one section I have credit for).

TL;DR When should you just throw in the towel and move on? I’m not in public so my job isn’t depending on it. I am so discouraged right now and sick of having to put so many things in my life on the backburner for the past 2 years.

    B-passed! (4/2013). Lost Credit. Passed again (3/2015)
    A-passed! (2/2014)
    R-passed! (8/2013). Lost Credit. Passed again (6/2015)
    F-Passed! (4/2015)

How about you come back and ask us this after you pass FAR in less than two weeks?

    πŸ™‚

Really, you're so close to that score release and BEC is right around the corner. Don't worry about throwing in the towel when you're so far into this yet.

And if by some horrible chance things don't work out this testing period you'll have to make that choice. It all just depends on how bad you want it. A lot of people make a lot more money in industry than they do in public and a CPA really helps that cause. But that's just money. If your quality of life is in the dumps then do what's best for your soul. There's only so much CPA exam that any of us can take…

Throwing in the towel is not an option. If I can do it, anyone can. You have the support system at A71 to pick you up when you're down, and the pride of achieving your ultimate goal should be driving force to overcome any adversity. So you dropped the ball, pick it up and run for the end-zone!

What if you get beat out for a potential job opportunity in the future because the other candidate has their CPA?

Repurchasing the study materials later on in life and starting from scratch (in your studies) does not sound appealing and nobody likes sitting on the sidelines.

I know someone in the EXACT same situation. Failed REG with a 74, retook it, failed it again, lost credit for AUD. Took AUD, failed it, lost credit for BEC. And then gave up.

She has not given a sh*t since that day. Failing is not the end of the world, you just have to live with the consequences.

    BEC - PASS (79)
    AUD - PASS (63, 71, 74, 74, 83)
    REG - PASS (88)
    FAR - PASS (58, 89)

You have to ask yourself, how much of the potential income you are going to lose and forfeit if you give up now. Being passed for a promotion is a loss and forfeiture of additional income.

Try and think about how you're going to feel about it in 5 years. When you look back or talk to someone about the CPA do you want to say that you gave it a shot and quit? Or do you want to tell them that you got some unlucky scores but stuck in there and then hand them your business card with the 3 letters we all love following your name?

    ya rite.

You seem to be very goal oriented and driven. This frustration is temporary and having the CPA is for life (if you choose). I doubt you are going to just sweep it under the rug and act like it never happened. You will kick yourself over and over for not finishing and regret quitting! Not to mention, as others have pointed out, losing a job opportunity or promotion to someone that does have their CPA will feel just plain awful. Don't quit. Winners never quit and quitters never win.

Only time I would say to throw in the towel would be if you decided to change careers. Other than that, NEVER throw in the towel. The significance of the CPA has not declined from the time you started taking this exam. If it was important enough for you to pick up the books and start, it will be important enough to you to accomplish and finish this. All this will become irrelevant though, once you come back and tell us about your final passing score πŸ™‚
