    Do any of you have a recommendation on a great resource to learn vlookup and pivot tables starting from the basics?

    If you can get access to Lynda.com there are some great instructional videos that explain them step by step – I've used them.

    Go to YouTube and type:

    ExcelisFun

    His name is Mike Girvin. He's really good,

    I have learned a ton from him.

    Give it a try!

    While you are at it, learn to navigate excel with just a keyboard. Pivot Tables tend to require a mouse to be efficient but once you go mouse-less you can do wonders.

    I agree with going mouse-less. I spent one entire day working without using my mouse so I could learn as many keyboard shortcuts as possible and increase my efficiency. It has made a world of difference in how fast I can work not having to touch my mouse every 5 seconds. I also agree with going to youtube to learn a lot of Excel functions. There are great videos out there that can really walk you through it. It's better if you have two monitors and can practice while the video is going.

    My excel skills are probably at a beginner level if even that. Should I buy a course program? I see them on groupon all the time for about $30-40. Should I take a computer class at a community college? Or should I just try to learn through youtube? I don't start working until September. What other programs should I be efficient in? (Sorry to high jack the post).

    @mamaberar:

    Was there a resource you could direct me to for a comprehensive list of shortcuts? I think I may have seen something on Chandoo but there may be better resources.

    Thank you mydnight and rsrasc for your recommendations. I'm in need of tutorials on pivot tables starting with the remedial and progressing from there and will definitely check out your suggestions.

    Google my friend. Decide on a project and Google any issues to figure out how to fix them. That's how I learned Pivot Tables, Vlookup, Visual Basic, etc. Google is all you need.

    GCF is great – that's what I used for everything.

    Here's a cool link with a long list of shortcuts I've kept with me:
