Which CPA Review course should I go with?

    Hello all

I am looking for a great CPA review course that will prepare me well. I have enough in savings to cover the cost of expensive review courses, however I would prefer inexpensive. Studying for the CPA will be a full time job for me!

    1) I was thinking of going with Becker just because I have heard they prepare you extremely well. I would also really appreciate the guidance they give. However it’s way too expensive and it would really suck if I fail an exam using Becker.

    2) I was thinking of going with Wiley and buying the books, test bank, and I would also combine that with the Ninja notes from Jeff. However I think I would need some guidance on what to concentrate in? Correct?

    3) I was thinking of going with Yaeger as an inexpensive option to Becker because the demo lectures online are okay and I think they use the Wiley books. However I am still not sure if it would prepare me extremely well.

    4) I was also thinking of CPAExcel because it’s cheaper than Becker and Yaeger but I am really not sure if it would prepare me well at all. Also, the demo on their website seems pretty neat and easy to use.

I just need some guidance. And if you recommend buying different courses for different sections (ex. becker for AUD, yaeger for FAR, etc.) I would really appreciate it. I am open to diversifying. I just want to be prepared extra well!

I was definitely thinking of getting the Ninja notes and the wiley test bank though, if that helps

ALSO, I want to add that I have been a year out of my bachelors in accounting program and I was an average B/C student. I haven’t been working in accounting either. But I want to make a jump back into it by studying for the CPA.

Having said that, I need a review course that will practically teach me everything I need to know over again!

    Thanks!!

I used Becker for BEC & AUD and didn't really love it. The sections are really long & the lectures are EXTREMELY boring (5 hours of “highlight this” “underline that”) I ended up getting lucky & took a different job that paid for new study materials so I chose to use Rogers for REG & FAR and I really like this course. He breaks it down into much more manageable pieces so it really doesnt seem that overwhelming. He also explains things really well rather than telling you what to highlight- he gives examples for concepts and they're much more understandable. It's also substantially cheaper than Becker and pretty comparable to Yaeger or Wiley.

AUD: PASSED [81]; Expired, retaking August 23rd
BEC: PASSED [83]; Expired, retaking July 11th
    REG: PASSED [83]
FAR: FAILED [64]; Retaking May 23rd

    @sscusc,

You are doing the right thing by asking. I shelled out money for a review course and I really didn't do the research. I went with the bells and whistles( all the free stuff and special support if you purchase the gold version) but when I began to study I found I did not like the course at all. I switched to yaeger for far, the demo did what I needed guided questions with concept answers. I am assuming that the rest of the course is going to be the same. I do know now what I need to pass this exam. It is entirely too expensive to chance by luck. I did purchase the ninja notes and audio, and wiley test bank to supplement the other course and found that I was getting more from the these products.

I also paid to take two parts because it was suggested in one of the demos I was considering not realizing I was NOT prepared. The advice was to apply for two parts so that the test window won't be wasted. Well I wasted 405.00 or more for not being prepared. I don't know if others will agree but don't pay for any part until you have studied and are ready to take the exam.

In summary I wasted $1700 on a review course, and $675.00 on application and test fees only to dislike the course, fail reg and cancel far. All down the drain, but valuable lesson learned. By all means, take your time and review the demos, review them a couple of times, not with emotion and not with money but with careful consideration of time and learning style. The ninja notes and audio is precious, if I could pass with nothing but Ninja and wiley, I would but I have found that I do need the videos to help guilde the way for passing far.

Everyone I know have used Becker, but they also had the luxury of it being paid for.

I personally don't do well in lectures because I like going at my own pace so I'm pretty much set on Becker self study

Make sure you understand your own learning style before you choose a course. My study material was free but I had the option of choosing Becker or CPA Excel. I chose CPA Excel because I needed smaller sized lectures. There are trade offs with each review course, but you have to find the one that meets your needs. Also make sure you know what is included in each review course and don't spend money on something that you won't actully use.

everyone i knew had used becker and passed, so i got becker. luckily my employer at the time paid for all of it. I've come to find that it's not really the best, it's just the most well-known. but i think it probably depends on your learning style. Becker is definitely good, and has helped alot of people pass the exams. Do a little research on the others that have been suggested, and choose the one that fits best for you.

    FAR - 1/26/2012 - PASSED (78, but Lost credit), re-do 11/27/2013 - PASSED (87)!
    AUD - EPIC FAIL, 71, 69; 68; 5/25/2013 - PASSED (85)!
    REG - 10/1/2012 - 72; 7/1/2013 - 73 UGH, 10/1/2013 - PASSED (85)!
    BEC - 2/28/2013 - PASSED (82)!
    Licensed CPA!

Used Becker self-study materials (just this for FAR original & REG #1), WileyTestBank, NINJA notes/audio, and Roger cram course for AUD #5, REG #3 & FAR reboot. CPA!

I have tried both Becker and CPAexcel.

I hated Becker. It was all “highlight this, underline this, circle this…” and turns out I wasn't actually learning anything from watching the lectures because I was too focused on what to highlight, etc.

Now I have CPAexcel. They're smaller lectures so if you have a day where you can only get a little time in, it is still possible to make process on the lectures. I'm not a huge fan of the test bank in CPAexcel, but I keep buying Jeff's 10-point package to get the NINJA audio and Wiley testbank.

Side note: Wiley recently bought CPAexcel so IMO if they do CPAexcel lectures and Wiley questions they will have a great program to offer.

I used ONLY CPAexcel for REG and got an 81. I did the same for FAR and got a 74 my first try. Although I will be honest and admit I did not get as many practice MCQs in as I should have. I bought the 10-point combo and used the audio and Wiley testbank as my restudy materials and passed my FAR retake.

I believe I saw a post on here that said there was a CPAexcel demo. If that's true I'd recommend giving it a shot. I like CPAexcel (except for the somewhat lacking test bank), so it would be worth checking out the demo.

I might be convinced on CPAexcel here and include Wiley books/ninja notes/testbank. I tried the demos. I prefer self-study. I honestly did not like Becker's lectures. It seemed way more highlight this and that, and less teaching.

Any thoughts on Yaeger by the way?

I'm in the same boat as the OP.

I have about 6-7 months to study for the exam. I have absolutely 0 responsibilities except that I like to go to the gym everyday.

I'm set on self study Becker as most of my friends used it and it seems to be more polished and provide more guidance. Still want to shop around tho.

3.3k is a hefty price tag

Since I switched from Cpaexcel to yaeger, I am more relaxed and confident while studying that I am not taking a blind shot in the dark,…Yaeger does what I needed and that is teach concepts while doing actual problems. I am definitley more relaxed and am confident that I will pass far. I don't feel like Yaeger lectures is leaving out anything but not overkill at the same time. I can now read the questions and understand immediately, and I am not surprised with information not in the lecture. Big difference and very relaxed. I am sure you will purchase based upon your learning style and what you need to pass. good luck

I would recommend becker. I have not seen excel. My exp is only with lambers and becker n wiley test bank. becker is the best. If you want you can top it up with wiley question bank which i think is worthy. According to me becker is good enough to see you thro in first attempt with some luck on ur side and with a thorough preparation

    BEC: 77(Nov 2010), 81(Jul 2012).
    FAR: 80(Jul 2012).
    REG: 72(Jul 2012), 78(Oct 2012).
    AUD: 71(Nov 2010),74(Jul 2012),74(Oct 2012),75(Jan 2013)- Thanks God, without you i couldnt have done this. I'M DONE !!!

Okay so I have narrowed it down to 3 (back to square one)

    BECKER

Pros: Everyone talks about how well its helped them prepare for the CPA. Guy in demo lectures seem to cover a lot.

Cons: Too expensive. Especially if I am strongly considering the wiley test bank/ninja notes with it. Seems to be a review course for people who did GREAT in accounting/did masters in accounting? Seems to be a lot of restrictions with the software.

    YAEGER

Pros: Seems to be a TEACHING course. Uses Wiley Books which I have heard only good things about. Also cheaper than Becker. The white board instruction seems to be pretty cool and beats Becker's style of instructing. Also it includes the Wiley test bank.

Cons: Not sure if I will be able to keep up with lectures. Will I be prepared well and any weak areas?

    CPAEXCEL

Pros: Best priced of all 3 courses. The sections for the exams are very organized.

Cons: Do not like their lecture videos from what I saw in the demo. Not sure if they would prepare me for everything?

I seem to be leaning towards Yaeger based on these pros/cons. What are the weak areas/disadvantages of Yaeger that I should know about? For the price of Yaeger, I would definitely pile it with the NINJA notes package. I really prefer reading the books and figuring things out myself. But I would be using the video lectures for guidance on the cpa exam and to fill in some gaps I have in the learning process.

I'm doing Becker right now, and this is my first time through, so I don't have much to compare it with. They're “mmmmmeh, okay.” My experiences with them are as follows:

The live classes are okay. You will not have the same instructor throughout the course, so you won't get used to a teaching style, and you won't have a regular instructor you can ask a question of from the last class period. Every session will be a different instructor. Some read right out of the book to you (which doesn't really add much value) while others have really good tips and shortcuts to help you out.

The online lectures have been helpful to me, especially since the live instructors often skip over stuff or just read out of the book. The online lectures do a pretty good job of explaining the “why” and giving you memory keys that are helpful. I had thought the the live classes would add benefit by being in a room with live people, but that really hasn't been the case. The live classes aren't really a place to ask many questions anyway — the classroom culture isn't really geared for, “Wait a minute, can you clarify that?” kinds of questions. If you don't get it in class, you're on your own.

The instructors offer their personal contact info to help you, though, so you can shoot them an email outside of class. I've also had good luck contacting Becker academic support to ask questions. I've sent in three questions to Academic Support as I've been going through homework, and I've gotten emailed responses back within a couple of days.

Despite what some of their literature still says, you will not get CDs or DVDs. It's all online. The downloads finally theoretically work for Mac, but they failed for me even though I use a supported system version and browser, so I'm stuck with the online version. That would be okay, if there weren't so many “glitches” with the new online system. I think it will be fine in a year or two, but it's new and not really ready for “prime time.”

That brings us to my *BIG* problem with Becker: Becker Tech Support SUCKS. I paid for all 4 sections up front to get the discount; had I known how bad their tech support would be, I would not have done so. It is bad to the point that I would seriously like switching to Yaeger or some other company for future sections.

Becker Tech Support does not reply even to really serious problems with their system. For example, after taking one of the practice exams, reviewing my mistakes was nearly impossible because their website's scroll features were not working (yes, I use a supported browser). That was bad enough, but I was completely unable to actually read a solution and explanation for SIX of the SEVEN task-based simulations. Only the explanation for the first one would come up (no matter which one was opened). I tried a couple of different computers and reported the problem to Becker Tech Support. They clearly didn't even read my message before responding and telling me to do exactly what I had reported was not working… So, ultimately, I know my score, but I gave up on trying to learn from my mistakes because I cannot see the explanations. Having invested 4 hours into taking the exam, I don't really feel I got what I paid for there… I won't be taking the second practice exam that is available because it does me no good to get a score and not be able to learn from my mistakes.

At least they responded back that time. The prior 4 or 5 times I've contacted them to report problems with their online interface, they acknowledged receipt and gave me a ticket number, then never ever EVER followed up or corrected the problem. These were for things like video clips not working, homework solutions said “A” was the solution, then explained why “C” was the solution, etc. Individually, they are small things — but when you're charging customers some serious bank for the experience, you might be interested in correcting these kinds of problems, no?

And yeah, I've followed up on a couple of the tickets, but it was clear the folks at Becker didn't care, so I gave up the effort. If they didn't already have my money, I'd probably try a different company for the next round. My sense is that any prep company really can give you the tools you need if you're ready to apply yourself to the task at hand, so I don't know that Becker is necessarily better or worse than any of the others. It all depends on whether you're willing to do the work. For me, I'm just so burned about the lousy tech support at Becker that it would drive me away. But the other parts of Becker are okay.

I just want to chime in and say it isn't always a con that Becker isn't a “teaching” course. It just depends on your learning style. I have heard the downside to some of the other review courses are that they offer too much information and you get bogged down in trying to learn how to do everything inside and out, when in reality, the exam is either 72 or 90 MCQs and some SIMs. School is for in-depth learning, a review course is just about beating the test.

I felt like Becker wasn't teaching me enough, so I was googling stuff, looking in my old textbooks, doing free practice exams on Gleim, even reading articles in the Journal of Accoutancy (this was for COSO on BEC). It was madness!!!!!! That was my first exam and I finally just decided to let it go. I purchased Wiley Test Bank for a few more practice MCQs and said to hell with the rest of it. I felt like this with every single exam, so I just decided to purchase one extra supplement per exam (NINJA materials) to have a little extra reading/listening material and let the chips fall where they may.

Just pick one and commit to it. Once you choose, don't second-guess yourself until after you've taken an exam, because the money is spent regardless. Personally, I liked Becker because the lectures were moderately entertaining, the layout was simple, and, well, I passed. And yes, I paid for Becker entirely out of pocket.

    BEC: (4/2012) 88
    AUD: (5/2012) 91
    REG: (8/2012) 82
    FAR: (1/2013) 78 🙂
