Anyone who has PASSED their Regulations exam, could you please approximate how many hours did you spend studying/preparing for it? I feel like I have to read something multiple times before I get a good understanding of it. So I envy the ones who only put in 80 hours and pass. Please share your experience. Currently I am using Roger CPA and WileyCPA for MCQs. Thank you in advance!

REG was the topic that I had my most background in but I still ended up studying 150-200 hours with Yaeger and Jeff's notes and audio. I am not sure if you have passed any other sections and if you have every use Jeff's audio but it really helped me a lot.

I spent around 30-40 hours preparing for REG using the NINJA Notes and MCQs. I was coming off of a break from studying because of tax season and didn't start to seriously study until 3 weeks before my exam. I do have some tax knowledge from work, but sadly nothing that was applicable on my exam, so I credit the awesomeness of the NINJA MCQs with my pass.

I studied from March till May something. It was awhile due to a vacation I took, and I'm not sure the exact hours. I just studied until I was getting 80s on the MCQs, and I knew enough of the material to pass.

Don't sweat it if it tales you longer than others. Comparisons can get you flustered. Just set a target date that you'd like to take the exam, study till you know the material, then schedule your exam.

    Passed all sections.

    OP:

It depends on your skill level. I, like another poster here, have a tremendous tax background. So I took REG at the busiest part of the year for me since I figured I didn't need to study much. It turned out alright for me.

If you are not a tax guy please put A LOT of time into REG. Tax concepts are counterintuitive and weird. You sit there thinking “wtf” if you are not already used to it.

I'd say the MINIMUM time you should put into REG without significant tax experience is this:

    8 Sections of Video: 3.5 Hour of video per section + pause and rewind of 1.5 hours = 5 x 8 = 40

    8 Sections of Homework: 15 hours per section x 8 = 120 Hours

2 Practice Finals + review of finals = 10 hours

    Final Review = 20 hours

    GRAND TOTAL: 190

And that is a MINIMUM. Put in less and you are asking to lose.
