    Hi all,

I took FAR exam in November using Becker and Ninja and failed with a 71. I used the Wiley book and Ninja for my retake and felt much better about the exam I took on 1/2/15. That being said, I feel that reading the text and working the MCQs in the book and in Ninja MCQ is the best combo for the way that I learn. I HATED the Becker lectures and feel thats not the best way for me to retain info. So for those out there that used the Wiley books to pass the exam, what was your study strategy?

My strategy with them was to read the books in their entirety then do the Wiley test bank in its entirety or as close as I could get. NINJA MCQ wasn't out yet when I did my studying, so I couldn't utilize it and therefore can't speak to it. I didn't do the problems in the book, but that was because I do better with them online; doing the questions is the book would make the Wiley test bank unneeded.

Sounds like your plan is pretty solid! 🙂

I used the Wiley books with success for BEC, AUD, and FAR. My study plan changed with each exam though. For AUD (first one I took) I watched all the lectures, did all the practice questions, and drilled MCQs/SIMS from the Wiley Testbank. For BEC I watched the econ lectures, but read everything else without watching videos. For FAR, I watched maybe 3 lectures before scrapping all that and just reading the text and drilling questions. I did all questions for BEC too.

For REG, I didn't study enough–no videos, didn't even finish all the material in the book, and drilled questions sporadically. I didn't pass first time.

    AUD - 89 May 2014
    BEC - 89 July 2014
    FAR - 86 August 2014
    REG - 69 November 2014, 82 Jan 2015

I used the Wiley books for all 4 sections and thought they worked great. I was doing this on a budget, so no Becker for me.

I did use some of the MCQs in the books, since sometimes I work better on paper. But I also needed to make sure I'd be okay doing questions on the computer for test time, so I did some of those also.

I worked each chapter at a time. Read the chapter, then did some of the questions– they break it down by area within the chapter, so I'd do just a few of the questions in each area initially just to make sure I was paying attention.

Later I'd go back and review and do more of the questions. For FAR I went back a third time and did more questions, since there was a lot of material and that was my longest scheduled study period total (7-8 weeks). I didn't want to forget the earlier material.

    AUD 84 (1/9/14-Wiley books/TB + free materials)
FAR 83 (5/21/14-the above + NINJA 10 Pt Combo Lite)
    REG 84 (7/9/14-Wiley books/TB + NINJA Audio/FC/Notes)
    BEC 76 (10/5/14-Wiley books/TB + NINJA Audio/FC)

I would also very much like to know. I have trouble with reading Wiley book Module 9D.

Kim, lilla, and Flattax, would each of you please give me a bit of more information on how each of you read the wiley text book? I even thought may be because I am not a native speaker, but I obviously have no trouble of reading any of my accounting books.

I gave up reading it a week ago as I was so slow in moving through the first module. Frankly it is quite stressful when you suddenly find out that the materials you are suppose to read become so hard to digest as to what the author tries to say. Tried to sign for Becker, but unfortunately I don't think I can follow their live schedules since my last accounting class was years ago.

So I would be greatly appreciated if you share some tips on how to best use this book. ( by the way I have yaeger right now)

@exerciseimportant, I merely read the book–no highlighting or anything–and took notes on a separate pad. I would rework examples.

Yeah, same here– I just read through it. It worked for me, but that doesn't mean it will work for everyone. You might want to try lecture videos if you're not digesting the material by just reading. Check out samples on YouTube to make sure their style works for you. Roger seems really great to me (high energy, fun teaching style), but not everyone likes that.

I was/am on a budget, so it was an old copy of the Wiley books (2013) for me, along with the Wiley TB for every section. Wiley has been great. The material in the Wiley books (including the end of chapter questions) is way harder than the material on the exam IMO. I would say that Wiley over-prepares you for the exam.

I know that my scores are not great, however; I studied a very short amount of time for each section and still passed all (so far) first time round. I would recommend Wiley to those who are disciplined and comfortable with studying independently, i.e. you were one of those college students who slept during class, but still did well by studying the textbook/materials on your own.

One criticism I have regarding the Wiley approach is that they tend to go into a ridiculous amount of details. Sometimes this can leave a reader confused. The solution to this is to go outside your study materials (Google) in order to obtain a more simple/birds-eye understanding of a particular topic.

I used Wiley books alone to pass all 4. Wiley books are so awesome but they just contain too much information. I will say the strategy is that as long as you invest enough time, you pass.
