    Hi all,

My firm will be paying for my course and after research I picked Wiley cpa excel. My issue is I cannot decide what to do regarding books. I really want the hard copies but in order to update them I will have to pay for new books (according to sales rep) each time. Then there is always the e-books but that isnt the same for me. Any tips on this issue as well as how to best make my time with cpa excel?

Ps used becker for far once befor over a yr ago and was not too happy.

I picked up the books, but I'm not sure I've even opened them yet. The online stuff is updated and much easier to access.

Quick question for the OP: why did you select CPA Excel and what was wrong with Becker? Just curious.

“Quick question for the OP: why did you select CPA Excel and what was wrong with Becker? Just curious.”

    I'll answer that for OP,

    1.) its overpriced

    2.) less questions/sims than CPAexcel

3.) You have fallen victim to marketing.

4.) there marketing is stupid, TWICE the pass rates of other companies you say?

5.) other companies are advertising 80%+ so how does one achieve an 160%+ pass rate?

    6.) pay for updates

7.) Learn the info? naaa, just highlight that, and that. Please revert to statement 2.) and highlight that also.

8.) stupid nmeumonics, yea some of them are good, others are way father than a stretch.

    9.) crappy customer service

…i'm sure i could keep going.

in CPAexcels favor, they have unlimited renewals, half the price for more material, and actually go about helping you understand the material instead of learning a silly nmeumonic.

As for the original OP question; The online course has a book there broken by study lecture. So if you go into any given section there is the book snippet that goes with the lecture section. I am unsure if there is an entire book layout in the online, but I am unsure as to you would want that type layout when the entire book is broken into the parts where the lecture are. I would go ahead and get the books, since they are free initially, you may never use them I know I very rarely have. I usually go through the lecture and read the part of the book for the section through the ebook, then decide to watch or not watch the lecture, then carry on with the mcq for it.

FYI:::: I have no bias against Becker :-7

If you pass within a year, this isn't a big deal. I was using books that were a year behind my study material and in my opinion any differences I saw were minimal. The book with the lessons stays current forever. I really liked CPA Excel good luck!

@Zackrampage the material doesn't change drastically so the books for the most part are good for the 18-month period you are trying to pass. I'm using CPAExcel so this is what I know…

In CPAExcel the come out with updates typically twice a year and they tell you where the updates are. You can print the Study Text for each lesson online, so if there is a big change in a section then you can just print the material if you want hard copies.

This happened to the Audit text about 6 months after I bought it. They re-arranged the end of the book, but it was not big deal. I just printed the material and studied like normal.

    Good Luck!

Ive read many of the MCQs from CPAExcel does not represent the actual exam's MCQs, what do you guys think?

@ Monkey Wrench, What do you think of Rogers vs CpaExcel?

    Thank you.

I think CPAExcel MCQs are fine. There is a lot of overlap with NINJA since they all probably pool from AICPA licensed questions.

I think CPAExcel + NINJA materials to supplement is a great way to approach the exams (it's how I passed).

Honestly, I never considered rogers after I watched some of his youtube videos, although mildly entertaining I felt it would be horribly annoying day after day. I know some people who have used it, and liked it. I think its all about whether or not you can stand his personality.

I am unsure about his pricing.

And with your other questions, the CPAexcel questions are AICPA licensed question therefore the same as all the others.

CPAExcel + Ninja has been one of my considerations. Sounds awesome you passed the exam using this combo. Thanks for the recommendation, and congrats on passing your exam!

    @ Monkey Wrench

I agree. I'm not sure if I can endure his personality through all sections, although it may work as I tend to lose focus easily. Also, he creates his own MCQs, so I'm not sure if that is a good thing..
