    Hey folks,

Does anyone know if the January 2015 Wiley books are too outdated to use for FAR? I plan to start studying this week to test in the early Fall. I emailed Wiley but don’t expect a reply until sometime tomorrow. Hoping someone might know now…

    Thanks.

No definitely not. I just used the 2014 books and they prepared me well for FAR which I took today. If I failed, it's because of beginner's inefficiency in the study process and also a short time span in which to prepare. I started with Becker but they overwhelm you with just way too much material that you will not get tested on. I'd say the Becker lectures are 95% worthless and 5% worthwhile. Just stay abreast of the very minor changes since the book was printed and you're all good.

I honestly think that its NOT too outdated. I believe it can still prepare you well since whatever new material came in 2015/2016 is minimal and sporadically tested. Wish you the best.

I'm not aware of FAR having had major changes, so 2015 should still be fine.

That being said, Wiley will probably tell you it's not, cause they'll think the newest is important…same as in college when the professors always wanted students to have the newest copy of the book, but it often wasn't needed.

The one suggestion I would have would be to consider supplementing with completely up-to-date practice questions. I haven't used them personally, but I've heard good things about the NINJA MCQ sold on this site, and they're just about $40 per exam (3-month subscription). Having a question bank of some sort is very very helpful for studying, and they usually are subscription-based so I assume you don't have a 2015 one. So, getting a cheap but current one would be a good way to make sure you caught anything that your 2015 materials didn't cover (though I don't think that would be much), while also providing the boost that comes from the question bank.

I wouldn't use 2015 books for FAR. Bond discount amortization changed and there's no more extraordinary items.

If you can brush up on these elsewhere, then fine, but materials are affordable enough and the exam is expensive in both $$ and time (3 months of your life between studying exam and waiting sometimes), that I think it's worth it.

Of course, ninja customers don't worry about such things because they get free updates 🙂

I emailed Wiley about the exact same thing and they gave me a discount code to order an up-to-date version. I spent $38 with tax, but that seemed minimal for a whole new book.
