This is pretty interesting (more interesting than a CPA Exam article involving legislation should be, probably).

Per the article, losing the CPA Exam altogether in Wisconsin was a possibility at one point:

“Shortly after enactment of the new law, the WICPA met with legislators and representatives from the Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS), the Wisconsin Accounting Examining Board (AEB) and the governor’s office to encourage prompt reinstatement of a CPA Exam education requirement to avoid losing the Uniform CPA Exam in Wisconsin, which both the AICPA and NASBA stated would be a strong possibility in the absence of any statutory CPA Exam education requirement.”

I live in Wisconsin! I just graduated last year with 152 credit hours (many UW schools require the 150 as an Accounting major so you will be ready to sit for the CPA exam) and now it's changed to 120 hours. I finished school in 4 years thanks to Spanish retro credits, but this means I could have finished in three…and that my student loans would be 25% lower right now. Oh well, glad I took the classes I did because I definitely learned a lot, and I may not have taken some of those classes without the university's 150 credit requirement. Interesting post, Jeff – thanks!

    BEC - 78 (8/30/13)
    REG - 73 (1/31/14) - 76 (4/7/14)

    FAR - after the wedding
AUD - also after the wedding

You need 120 hrs to sit for the exam but to get the license once you pass all 4 parts, you still need 150 credits.

I misread this, I thought they changed licensure to 120 hrs.

Personally, I think they should change the education requirement for licensing to 120 hours. The only beneficiary of the 150 hr rule are schools who get an extra year of tuition from us. I wonder where this idea for 150 hrs originated…

I was about to get upset as I had to jump through tons of hoops the last couple years to get accounting credits to sit for the exam (I had the 150, but not enough in accounting). However, I don't think this change would've affected me. It is kind of scary to think about Wisconsin not having the uniform exam…
