So, my boyfriend got his results back, and he got a 45 on FAR

He supposedly studied for 3 months. I’ve never, ever heard of a score that low, from someone who studied.

I worked my butt off and passed my exams 2 years ago. He was supposed to work on his then too, and put it off.

I’ve been super supportive about him “finally getting the motivation to study” and now he gets a 45

I’m so confused. Has anyone who actually studied for 3 months failed that bad? Or should I assume that he really didn’t study and let another 3 months of our lives slip away?

I’m super frustrated. I know how hard the exams are. Studying was a real low point in my life. But a 45???

Edit: I know I sound harsh. I’m just honestly confused about how he got a 45. I put no pressure on him. Gave him time, made no plans to do anything. I’m just shocked. Even a 60 or 70 would have made more sense than a 45.

And a couple of years back, he did lie about studying for the exam, when he wasn’t. so I’m honestly just tying to figure out if that’s happened again.

I don’t care if he becomes a CPA too. Wasn’t my idea for him to pursue this again, but I was 100% supportive.

Lol this thread. 3 months is too long to study for an exam. Why you so angry/disappointed anyways? I feel bad for this boyfriend. First he failed hard with a 45 (whether he studied or not) and now the girlfriend is whining about it.

But seriously, if you doubt him, get some evidence from his software use, notes, etc, that he did a certain number of MCQs, SIMS, etc.

If you have the evidence that he did not study then go ahead and end it, because he is lying to you, otherwise the 45 score could be because of something else.

Tell your boyfriend about this forum. He doesn't have to identify himself in that way. Here he can join a community of people facing the same doubts and struggles with these exams. He can post questions when he needs help studying. He can scream into the night and someone helpful will answer. A 45 is basically unheard of for someone that studied for 3 months. That in itself is something to be concerned about. That said, maybe it was a fluke. If I studied for 3 months though, I'd schedule the retake for 2 weeks out and do it again. Don't need to study another 3 months !!

I second what monikernc mentioned. Think of this site as CPA anonymous. CPA exam failure relapse prevention requires diligence and includes avoiding triggers, we will be here for him.

I completely understand that I'm being perceived as horrible and whiny, to some people. But just to clarify, I wasn't upset he failed. I was just taken by complete surprise at how low his score was. I know people who have gone in with very little preparation and still pulled out scores in the 60's.

It wasn't my idea for him to pursue the CPA exam again. Seriously.
But I have completely supported him. I understand that he probably feels bad, but I also feel bad, because I put our lives on hold again, and he got a score that was so low, that it's kind of hard to comprehend how that happened… And with the history of distrust, I was just super confused.

Yes, people have failed this bad after studying. People have questioned and doubted whether they really even studied, but sometimes they really did study and really did fail that bad. But sometimes, too, they didn't study hard. Maybe “studied for 3 months” meant that for 3 months they turned on the lectures in the background while they played their PS3, then realized they hadn't heard a word that was said for the past 3 hours so re-listened to the same lecture the next night, and did the same thing for the next week.

I would suggest a forward-looking approach: offer to help him with his studying, both working on a new approach to studying and even helping with the studying itself. If you can help plan out the studying and be a “study buddy”, then you can know how much he is studying, and help make sure the proper amount of studying is happening. And then, if next score release is another 45, you'll know for sure he was studying…and maybe instead with the new study-buddy and study method, next score release will be an 85, and then you guys won't have to worry about the 45 anymore at all. 🙂

Does admit their study habits haven't been the best, but isn't sure how to improve. So, these people do exist. 🙂
