Work Experience required before I can proceed

I just received my packet from TSBPA after finally passing my last exam earlier this month.

I was under the impression that I could complete both the Ethics course and Code exam before my work experience would be required.

However, after reading the packet contents I found out I would only receive these AFTER my work experience forms were received.

Worried that my credits would expire, I contacted the Board. Fortunately I was told that they do not expire and if I needed a year to complete the work requirement, that would be all right.

I am relieved but anxious to get the next step rolling in the process.

I am currently working as a college math professor as well as a tutor for both math and business courses.

Since starting my CPA journey, I have been on numerous job interviews both in and out of state but for various reasons these have not panned out. One of the big hurdles is the requirement of 3 to 5 years of experience for even entry level positions.

As many TX candidates know, the Board can be very picky when it comes to acceptable work experience.

Any leads or suggestions would be greatly appreciated 🙂

Have you tried placement agencies? I was hired through one and it worked out great. I've been at my company 7 years and received the applicable work experience for the CPA licensing within the first 2 years. I wasn't going for my CPA when I was hired, but I'm sure any company would be willing to work with you on the requirements if they know when they hire you that is what you're looking for as long as you don't give them the impression you'll leave as soon as you get the form signed.

Up until now, I have only contacted companies directly. Do placement agencies charge fees or require special paperwork?

I am confused. By definition entry level positions do not require experience. What positions require 3-5 years that you are applying to?

    AUD - 2/1/2014 - 92
    BEC - 2/8/2014 - 79
    REG - 5/17/2014
    FAR - 5/21/2014

The positions I have applied for met my skills and experience level. However, some positions, specifically in the oil and gas industry (Houston) up 3-5 years of experience in the industry.

Besides those, the majority of positions available are above entry level; requiring anywhere between 1 to 25 years experience.

Placement agencies are paid by the companies that use them to find potential employees, not the ones looking for jobs. You may have to take tests (Excel, accounting) so they can assess your aptitude in those areas, but you will not have to pay any fees. I wouldn't give up on contacting companies directly, but just know that a lot of companies will not hire without going through a placement agency, especially for entry level, because it's better to pay the agency to weed through the hundreds of applications and resumes and only submit to the hiring managers people that pass their communicated criteria. The higher level positions are more likely to do their own weeding because they are paying more for the person and don't want to pay the agency the % fee on a much bigger salary.

That explains why I have not seen many entry level positions listed directly from company websites.
