Worst Question Ever: "How was studying today?"

Every time I tell my boyfriend that I studied, he asks me this question: “So how was it? How was studying?” How am I supposed to answer that??? I guess I usually go with “good” or “fine,” but it’s not a legitimate answer. I did the studying. There are no adjectives to describe it, because it’s something that HAS to be done, not something I choose to do (okay, well, I did choose to take/pass the CPA exam, blah, blah, blah). But you know what I mean? I’m past the point of choice. Which means that it’s not something that goes well or goes poorly, it just goes. Especially because there is no immediate end result. The test is something that can go well or poorly. But not studying.

    Anyone else have this issue?

    B - 80
    A - 80
    R - 71, 59, 74, 80 FINALLY!
    F - 77

Used Kaplan for FAR, BEC, AUD, and the first 2 REG attempts. I started using NINJA about 2 weeks before my 3rd REG attempt. I believe it's why I was so close to passing and why I passed the 4th time. USE IT FROM THE BEGINNING.

I usually comment on how I am doing with MCQs or if the material is easy to GRaSP(P). Some days end up being better than others as the only test I have taken is FAR and MCQs could be tougher one day more than another while studying and you realize you have to review a section.

    Journey Started - January 2015
    FAR - 4/2015 - Passed
    AUD - 7/2015 - Passed
    BEC - 8/2015 - Passed
    REG - 11/12/2015 - Passed

Sometimes my parents like to call and ask how I'm doing to which I want to say “I wanted to punch my laptop over and over again from doing MCQ”…or (worse) say “shouldn't you be studying?” when I take a break to watch a tv show or shoot a text to a friend.

All in all, my answer is always “It's going okay”. Neutral and no more conversation from it lol

Ok good. Stuff like this is why I love this board. I really though I had anger issues. Glad to know I'm not the only one. If I go on a run of 3+ wrong answers in a row i legitimately want to punch my laptop.

What annoys me most about that question is that I know they probably don't really care and are just making small talk. As an introvert, I loathe small talk. It's a complete and total waste of time. I don't want to talk about something you won't even remember in half an hour. Ask me about something that legitimately makes a difference to you. If you're not a CPA or studying to be a CPA or planning to study to be a CPA, then what possible difference could the nature of my study session make?

I'm not grumpy. I just don't have time for nonsense.

and this is why accountants are stereotyped the way they are

How are accountants stereotyped? Nerdy? Boring? Anti-social? If that keeps people from engaging in mindless chit-chat with me, I'm not losing any sleep over it.

I hate small talk so bad cuz it is usually very invasive and yes people will not remember or don't care and sometimes they don't realize what they are asking is really hurtful. This is why I hate going to the hair dresser.

The question” How was studying?” usually ends with, “Are you ready for the test now?” Yes I studied for two hours I am so ready I will get a 99 no problem. Cruse you and stop asking me if I am ready now, cuz the fact is even when I take the test I don't feel ready but you just got to take it sometime.

“and this is why accountants are stereotyped the way they are”

That's only because most people don't know what actuaries are.

Ugg.. It's like they would understand or care!!! I just respond by saying: well, I was studying, what do you think??????

I am just biting the bullet here…

I only take that question seriously from my study buddy because he only knows what it's like to prepare for the CPA (he is not an accountant or preparing for the CPA but we go to school together haha).

“That's only because most people don't know what actuaries are.” hahahaha, so funny.

I also don't care about stereotypes. I just want people to leave me alone.

I hate when my sister calls and says “are you done studying?, Ok, good, can you watch my son? I know you'll pass.” Then, the next week she goes “why are you so stressed out? what, you haven't studied enough?” I just want to say “stop bothering me, talk to me when I'm doing with this nightmare.”

To the OP. If he is about to be an ex-boyfriend for asking that question too many times, I just want to throw my hat in the ring that I am available ; )
