Would it be okay to contact VP of Internal Audit?

I saw our company’s VP of Internal Audit today, and at first I was going to say hi, but then I figured he has important business to attend to (since he is an officer) would it be appropriate to email him and say that I saw him today and wanted to say hi and tell him about myself and express my interest in internal audit?

I guess it's appropriate but have to ask (as I'm guessing he might) if you thought he was “too busy” for a quick hi in passing why would he have time to read an email?

Personally I'd wait until there was a position open in his department if there isn't currently one.

I see, thanks. So, funny story. I was curious to see if it is possible to connect with him on LinkedIn, and much to my surprise, it was because we shared a connection. But I am actually having second thoughts about that and am just wondering, is there a way to retract a LinkedIn invitation?

You're overanalyzing it, stop that. Next time you see him in a hallway say hi or send him email and introduce yourself. What's such a big deal? Find something in common, IA would be the obvious answer, and start the conversation there.

How would I know it works? I did just that, emailed a SVP of IA in my company asking her for guidance and 18months later I am studying for CPA & planning 2-3 year accounting rotation (I have MBA in finance so my background & career aspirations are probably different than yours). Anyway, the SVP became my mentor and I can't say enough about how grateful I am that I hit send.

Oh and btw, the company I work for has 300K+ employees so I would imagine that if “my” VP of audit made time in her schedule to put up with my nonsense, “your” VP could do so as well….

    Good luck!

Wow 300K, must be a really big company. The one I work at has only around 10K. And I forgot to include this in the original post, but internal audit, along with a lot of other departments, is actually located at another building, so if he is here walking around, there must be some reason behind that. But anyways, I am a recent graduate, I have my Bachelors in Accounting and I have met the 150-hour requirement to become a CPA, and I hope to get the exam over with this year. I am just wondering, would this email be all right?

    Subject: Good Morning

    Dear Mr. (name)

I am currently working as a medicare auditor for your company. However, I have aspired to be an internal auditor and CPA for a long time, since when I started studying accounting at (university). I currently have met the 150-hour requirement, and have passed two of the four sections of the CPA exam. I am just wondering, could you provide some insight or guidance as to what an individual who aspires to become an internal auditor should do?

    Sincerely,

    (name)

    My $0.02:

    Subject: Career in Internal Audit

    Mr. XXX,

My name is …. and I'm currently medicare auditor at …. department (AKA the department that you have been visiting a lot lately…). I'm interested in pursuing a career in internal audit and was wondering if you could provide some insight regarding the field. Please let me know if you'd be available to meet in person and answer a few questions.

    Sincerely,

    XYZ

If you can, try to connect with him on a different level than just work. Maybe he likes to golf or play soccer, history buff, loves to cook, rides motorcycles…whatever. You should have a few common denominators in your pocket to talk to him about when you see him / meet him next. Hope that makes sense.

If I were you, I'd start trying to connect in person first. It may come across as a little weird sending an introductory email with no lead in.

Just start with “Hi” and a nice handshake and go from there. Seriously.

Thanks for the advice. Honestly, this sounds kind of gutsy, but I am going to give it a shot tomorrow.

    @billbrasskey

Unfortunately, I don't get the chance to come across him often. Internal audit, along with several other departments, is located at a different building in another area. And so when he is here, it is usually for some specific reason.

Yes, but don't be a weirdo.

Just send an intro email… you don't need to say you were stalking him.

Folks wanted to add my 2 cents. Just say hi to him next time you see him. If he stops, then straight up ask him if he has any positions open. The worst that can happen is, he will ask you to send him an email or he will say there is nothing. That's it.

He might even like your bold approach. Further if you don't think you will see him soon, shoot him an email.

    Go for it.
