Wow, people really don't like TurboTax this year

Work just issued our W2s and I was just about to get started on my eFiling, but something gave me pause:

    https://www.amazon.com/TurboTax-Deluxe-State-Software-Refund/dp/B00MYXTCGY/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1422374850&sr=8-2&keywords=TurboTax+Basic+2014

This years’ TurboTax has 620 1-star votes out of 870 votes 😐

Apparently the Basic Version is cheaper but no longer covers itemized deductions and you can’t (?) file your state return with it. They also increased the price of the Deluxe version and it does pretty much what the basic version did last year, and you also have to pay an additional $20 on top of that to eFile your state taxes.

What software are you all going to use for eFiling?

If you drill down – people are mad about a price increase – not necessarily because of the product.

I used it last and already downloaded it this year for a 1099 filing. It's fine (from my perspective, anyway)

From what I understand they disabled features that are typically found in a lower priced version and moved them to a higher priced version. Sure, pure money grab.

Wait for deals…they will show up. I got my home and business version for $46 2 weeks ago. Physical CD shipped to me.

I've always used TurboTax. I don't have to file a state return, so the issues with that won't affect me…and it looks like I'll be getting a pretty good refund back, so I don't have a problem with paying a few extra bucks for the Deluxe version.

I would happily pay a few extra dollars to keep things consistent and quickly file my taxes with software that I'm familiar with. I'd be much more worried if they lost compatibility or if there were glitches related to my ability to accurately and quickly file my fed/state/local returns.

As far as price goes, it's only worth the difference between the next best alternative.

I'll deal with the price increase. I love TurboTax.

I don't make that much money so I qualify to get my taxes done for free. This year I have an option of doing them online through -HR block online via myfreetaxes.com or through TurboTax Freedom Edition. Anybody heard of these or suggestion on which one I should utilize?

freetaxusa.com is the one I've used the past 10 years and have never had a problem nor a price increase. It's free for federal returns and 12.95 for state and you can pretty much do everything the full version of turbo tax can.

Well alright, if you guys are still on board then I'll go ahead and ignore all of the Amazon crybabies.

CPA8488, I've used the TurboTax Freedom Edition back in '09 or so and it was perfect. I'm sure it's still pretty top tier.

Someone I know filed their return using the Turbo Tax Free Edition, and it sounds like it was a smooth process. They offer free e-filing for 1040EZ's and 1040A's, along with your corresponding state return. Pretty sweet deal if you have a simple return!

I used the Turbo Tax Completely Free edition – Fed and State absolutely free. Worked brilliantly and both returns were already accepted by their corresponding authorities.

Of course, for me it was single filing, standard deduction, two W-2's, and student loan interest paid….and I qualified income wise because I only started in July. Next year will be a different matter…….

I use TaxAct as I personally like it better than Turbo Tax. Their ultimate bundle costs $19.99 for federal and state returns with e-filing included as well as all individual tax forms as far as I can tell. I took advantage of a promotional offer this year and ended up only paying $6 for that bundle and e-filing, so I thought it was well worth it. TaxAct Professional is also what I use to prepare returns on the side for my personal clients.

I love FreeTaxUSA.com. I have 15 years tax prep experience working for someone else, however for my own personal return I use freetaxusa. Its great software and very cheap, last year I think it cost me $20-$30 for Fed and 2 states. Sch A, B, D, E (with depreciation) and AMT plus allocating income between 2 states.

So just out of curiosity…why buy a download or the CDs instead of just using the online filing system? I've used TurboTax for my own taxes every year that I wasn't working in public (aka couldn't use my employer's system), but have never bought a CD or downloaded a program.

Wait, people actually pay to file their state returns?

In Maryland, at least, it is free to e-file directly to the Comptroller's office. I have used TurboTax since grade school and I do the same routine every year. It's simple: Fill out everything, including when they ask you state specific questions. Once you get to the very end, see how much your state refund will be. Write this number down. Go to your local state's website, fill out the return (state returns are pretty quick) and match up the refunds. A few times TurboTax's computation got me an extra couple hundred that I would have missed on my own and I still filed for free.
