Yaeger’s $7/week test bank: a sort-of review

NOTE: This review applies to the test bank ONLY, purchased separately from the “main” course. I do not have the main course and you should not assume anything here applies to the main Yaeger course, only the stadalone testbank.

So, I have FAR in about a week. Wiley Test Bank and CPAexcel served me well, but the memorization effect definitely took hold by now, and it was substantially affecting how much I learned vs. just memorized the answer to and subconsciously knew the answer to. I considered Ninja MCQ, but with only a week left I figured I wouldn’t get my full money’s worth out of it (yes, it’s only $47, and yes, I am that cheap). That’s when I found Yaeger’s cool pricing model test bank: $7, billed on a weekly basis until cancelled, for full access to the test bank they have. Perfect for my time needs, only $7, let’s do it.

Well, you get what you pay for, guys.

Here’s problem #1. And it’s a huge problem. There is no way to select only material you have not seen. Or material you have gotten wrong. Or questions you flagged during quizzes. The only way you can control the material is by topic and number of questions, so I could limit to to one of the 12 or so broad sections, but that’s it.

And I don’t know if this is because the quiz generator has a crappy algorithm for choosing questions, or because the test bank is just too small (they claim 5000 questions total so I figured about 1200 or so for FAR alone), but I see repeats. Not just occasionally. A WHOLE LOT. I have only done 8 sets of 20 questions each and A LOT of repeats have come up. My last session of 20 questions had, I dunno, 4 or 5 new questions out of 20? So that was a lot of wasted time.

Problem #2. No testbank-wide statistics. No averages, trending averages, no total score by module, no highlighting of your overall weaknesses. No, there are only end-of-quiz, standalone statistics. So within that one quiz, okay, I didn’t do good on inventory and did great on fixed assets. That’s helpful. But was that an anomaly? Am I actually averaging 90% on inventory questions and I just screwed up on a few, and am I actually averaging 50% on fixed assets and just got lucky? There’s no way to answer that question, unless you want to click through every last quiz you’ve done and count for yourself…no thanks. I’ve done 150 sessions on Wiley Test Bank. I am not about to click through a similar number of sessions in Yaeger to average each section by hand.

And problem #3. This is my biggest problem with the product. No study mode. Study mode is the mode where you select the answer to the question and you’re given immediate feedback. Absolutely critical in learning. Get it wrong? Learn why. Get it right, but you just guessed and got lucky? That’s useless, learn why it was right. Study mode has probably taught me more than lectures and reading. And Yaeger’s test bank does not allow it.

Instead, you answer the 20 questions in a row. At the end, you see what you got right and wrong and explanations for each. Which is substantially less useful. When I answered question #2 wrong, 25 minutes ago, I don’t remember what logic was going through my head. I don’t know if this is a math error, or maybe I read the dates wrong, or if I just don’t understand the problem. For every question I got right, I don’t know if I guessed and lucked out or actually understood. They don’t even bother to tell you which answer you DID choose so maybe you could work out why you chose it, they just tell you the correct answer and why. They don’t tell you why answers A, B, and C were wrong, only why D is correct.

So, there’s my “review” if you will. I think this product is borderline useless, mainly for the lack of study mode and for the abundance of unavoidable repeats. I am glad I only paid $7 for this, but if I could do it again I probably wouldn’t even bother spending that.

(and again, note, this review has nothing to do with the main Yaeger course. perhaps that has study mode and course-wide stats and ways to eliminate repeats, I really don’t know because I don’t use it.)

You hit it spot on. I bought it and Ninja MCQ the same week and cancelled Yaeger right away.
