You Are Only Hurting Yourself by Giving Up & Walking Away

I recently have seen a lot of new posters on here posting about wanting to give up and walk away. You will only be hurting yourself if you do so. I would love to be in your position right now of having a steady accounting job while working on the CPA exams. Too bad I don’t have that luxury.

You guys on the other hand do. Coming from a retail for the last three years and not doing anything related in accounting SUCKS! The last thing I was doing was taxes but that ended when tax season was over. Not only that, I came from and interview a few days ago and found out I got beat out by someone with slightly more experience than me even though I did great on the interview.

Am i planning to GIVE UP? HELL NO!

Some of you have passed at least one or more parts. That’s more I can say about myself since I have yet knocked out one under my belt.

Think about what you will be losing out on if you give up now. All that money and time would have been wasted and all that hard work would be for naught because those scores would have expired. Think about the all the possible missed promotions just because you decided not to work on those exams. How would you feel if that promotion you richly deserved was given to someone else only because they were the ones which the passed exams?

Skynet, How many parts have you taken thus far? You have a Bachelors Degree in Accounting and never worked in the field? You don't like South Florida? Dude, we have a big country here. You never thought about relocating?

@BarceFan – I am taking BEC in October & REG in November. My last accounting job was in AP in 2009. That was when the economy tanked and I was out of a job. With not much accounting experience it is tough. I only took the retail job because I was short on cash and needed a job badly. Now I am basically starting all over again, but this time I made it my focus to pass the CPA exams. It's only by passing the exams will firms or employers will really take my resume seriously. I'm still applying for jobs though and not giving up.

Skynet, the best advice that I can give you is to stick to one part until you pass it. When you go from one to the other and jump between concepts, you making it worse. The second advice will be to start looking for Accounting jobs all over the country. I know you dont have kids cause you are a young player so that makes it easier to relocate. The more time you spend in retail, the worst it will be. When I graduated at the age of 26 (had too much fun to leave college), I couldn't get a job in Miami after graduating,so I started applying all over the country with Monster.com until I landed a job in Atlanta.

I left a Big 4 with no real plan. Big mistake. I ended up taking a retail job because of counsel from someone I thought had my best interest at hand. Another big mistake. Some how I stayed at this job for 2 plus years.

However, I was able to complete an online program, get a scholarship for CPAexcel, network on LinkedIn, and complete an Oracle functional application training. Now I am tackling the CPA exam. I plan to apply for jobs with global, national, and regional firms in South Florida.

I learned many lessons but some good came out of it. I am hoping for the best. I plan to do my best in South Florida.

Great to know I am not the only one trying to press through the lack of current relevant experience wall!

You've got to follow your dreams no matter where they lead you. I was a newly divorced mom of a 10 and 3 year old when I thought I'd get my Associates degree in accounting. Flash forward 6 years and I'm working on my Masters when the insane idea of CPA crops up! Doesn't matter where you are in life, or what cards you've been dealt. What matters is how you proceed. Sent out over 350 resumes when my loser boss fired me for an illegal reason. Got a job that wasn't my “dream job” but a ridiculously overpaid admin assistant who is home by 4pm every day!

    Life is good!
