I know that a lot of candidates are going into the Christmas holiday frustrated because they failed their exam(s) from the Oct/Nov window. Christmas makes it especially tough because you get to see all of your relatives who will ask “hey – did you get your score!?!?”

Try as you may to explain that you studied your tail off – they won’t get it. They’ll feel bad for you, but they don’t understand that you started studying in August or September and 4-5 months later you get kicked in the stomach with a failing score and no insight as to what you did wrong. Oh – and guess what – you get to do it all over again, but have busy season coming up.

I understand the frustration and try to use my experience to help people “get back up” and keep going, but I think there’s someone even better than me who can help. I’ve asked Phil Yaeger if the readers of my blog could call him and talk things over, and he has generously agreed. It doesn’t matter if you’re a student of his or not – he’ll be glad to talk to you and help you work out a new study plan.

If you’ve never spoken to Phil – he’s the nicest guy in the world. I often refer frustrated candidates who e-mail me to Phil and they write me back thanking me. As I’ve said before – Yaeger is a family owned company and they genuinely care about people and will do whatever it takes to help them pass.

Yaeger CPA Review is also offering readers of this site an exclusive discount on their CPA review course.

If you’re frustrated – give Phil a call @ 800-824-2811.  You’ll be glad that you did.

Far and away the most clicked “How to Pass…” link on my page is the BEC free webcast from Yaeger. It’s probably 5-1 more popular than REG or FAR. This means that coincidentally, people are sitting for BEC this month instead of FAR or REG (AUD hasn’t been filmed yet) or people really have hard time with BEC. I think it’s the latter.

BEC is supposed to be a casual overview of relevant business topics that CPAs need to know…a sort of benign walk down memory lane of your non-accounting college courses (save Cost Accounting). It is actually anything but that. People waltz into BEC and leave with a limp. It’s a hard test and I rank it as the 2nd hardest exam behind FAR.

It took me three times of failing BEC before I got Yaeger’s BEC CRAM DVD and scored an 80. I assumed that my case was probably unique, but then I got an e-mail from a friend this week who previously scored consecutive 65’s on BEC (what’s the deal with consecutively same scores…71s…65s…74s? anyway…) and then tacked on 11 points after I implored him to get Yaeger’s BEC CRAM.

It’s hard to get someone who dropped the equivalent of an engagement ring (sorry dear, I was an unemployed broke college grad, so 2 months salary wasn’t much back then) on another package to admit that an inexpensive cram DVD and a book that you can buy at a local bookstore got them to pass, but deep down inside he knows it did the trick, I think.

If you’re trying to pass BEC – and the traffic clicks indicate that many are – give the Yaeger cram a try. It’s the least expensive of their crams ($94 with the 71cram discount code) and it worked for me, as well as others.

I’ve had at least 10 e-mails this week from people asking about getting through BEC (and if you’re frustated too, don’t hesitate to write/vent…I always write back as soon as I can), so I know people are fighting with it (particularly Financial Mgmt and Cost Accounting) and wanted to write more about it.

I’m wrapping up Yaeger’s REG course and will shortly begin reviewing my notes and final prep for Thursday’s exam. I’m as prepared for this test as I’ve been for any other.

Thanks for reading.

July 7 came and went and I obviously didn’t take REG. In fact, I’m only into hour 9 of individual tax – my first module. I’ve been a little busy, but the biggest reason why I’m only 9 hours into my study program is that I’ve been taking it slow. 15 minutes here…30 minutes there – I’m rebuilding my knowledge of individual tax and it’s proven successful. Two exams ago, I scored a 93 in individual tax, but I’m taking nothing for granted at this point.

I am taking very good notes and am absorbing the material. There’s little nuances that the Exam will try to use to expose candidates’ weaknesses and I don’t plan on falling for them because I’m jotting down rules, exceptions, and exceptions to the exceptions in the margins of my Wiley book (note to editor – make them wider next time, please) and will review them periodically as my studying process progresses.

I became a fan of Phil Yaeger because 1. he was nice enough to offer readers of this site a discount better than what he gives the Big 4 candidates and 2. he got me through the humbling ordeal known as BEC with a score that I didn’t think was possible for me.

Now, after spending 9 hours out of the 30 or so in his REG course, I’m an even bigger fan of Dr. Yaeger. Phil does something that I think is unique to the industry. He covers a topic in the Wiley book such as life insurance proceeds or whatever, discusses the text, puts in his $.02 and then has the candidate immediately flip to 3 or 4 relevant multiple choice questions. In doing this, you’re getting both the theory and the application. The previous review materials I’ve studied are structured to where you go through the entire unit and THEN do questions. After completing a module with Phil, you’ve already done 100+ questions on the topic.

I will wrap up studying unit 9 and 10 in Module 33 tomorrow, review my notes and type then into Excel, and then do every question on the Wiley software for the topic.

I discovered recently that July 2008 is as busy a month for me as I can remember – something every weekend…kids have something…family vacation…blah blah. If I take REG in August and then sit for FARE in October, I really don’t care.

As long as I’ve passed the ethics exam by Christmas, I’ll be happy.

Thanks for reading.

July is just a few days away and if you’re planning on taking a section of the CPA Exam during this window, I can’t stress enough how helpful the right cram course can be.

If you’re like most candidates, you started studying for your current section 1.5 to-2 months ago. How can you remember everything you went over during the first week?

Some people are not fans of a “cram” program. I heard one person call them a “gimmick” to use in lieu of studying. They are intended to be a supplement, not a substitute.

If you are already using Yaeger’s full course, then you likely already have the cram DVD. The Yaeger cram is especially helpful to people who have used other CPA Review courses for their main preparation.

I say this for two reasons:

1. You get another instructor’s perspective on what is important to cover for the exam, and you may get a different take on how to tackle a certain type of problem or a better acronym to remember something.

2. Yaeger’s cram DVD condenses their entire program into 12-20 hours (depending on the section), but they use the same book (Wiley) and go through it page by page just like their regular course, albeit at an almost breakneck pace due to the amount of material to cover. Yaeger’s cram program is unique in the fact that they still go through the textbook basically cover to cover, but do so fast enough to cover the material, but not so quickly that you don’t have time to catch your breath.

Their cram DVD is not meant to “teach” you the material for the first time. It’s meant to reinforce weak areas and remind of you things that you probably forgot about 8 weeks ago. If you have already put in the time and learned the concepts, then the Yaeger cram could make the difference between passing and failing by giving you a few precious points.

Yaeger’s site says that the typical user of the cram who previously failed the section adds 5-15 points to their score. My BEC experience is right in line with that. I added 9 points after using their cram DVD and finally passed with an 80.

Yaeger’s cram product is among the cheapest in the industry. I recommend it only because I’ve used it – and it works.

Save $5 (free shipping, basically) if you use the 71cram coupon code.

If you’re like me – the LAST thing you want to do is drop more $$ on more CPA Review materials, but if spending the extra money is the difference between passing or not – then that’s priceless.

Reloaded

My Yaeger package came in the mail today. I ordered one complete FARE package (Wiley book + 13 DVDs + a CRAM DVD + FARE Audio (mp3) + Wiley Exam 13.0 Exam Software). I also ordered the same thing for REG (9 DVDs), minus the book, CRAM, and audios because I already owned them.

I quickly discovered that the DVDs for the HomeStudy program have a feature that is unique to Yaeger – you can use them in your home DVD player. That means that I can sit on the couch with my book and watch the lectures if I want to and not be slave to the kitchen table and my laptop. This may seem a minor detail, but picture how many hours of material are on 13 DVDs for FARE.

Your butt will know the difference.

I got a discount and you can get one too…

I know this much: Yaeger added NINE points to my BEC score after failing it 3 times and I didn’t study any harder than the previous times.

Yaeger has also offered this site’s readers awesome discounts on their materials. Why? Because this site is about struggling with the CPA Exam and overcoming it and they want to put the tools in your hands to PASS the CPA Exam.

Note: open the webinar links using Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player. I can’t get Firefox to work with it.

A month ago, I had no idea who Phil Yaeger was. I had seen the Yaeger logo, but I didn’t know a thing about Yaeger CPA Review.

Then, I bought their audio products for BEC and REG. I liked it. It sounded authentic instead of over-produced and like it would if a CPA Review instructor were personally coaching you. I then had their CRAM DVDs sent to my house and I went out and bought the Wiley textbooks and have since liked their product.

I am convinced that Yaeger CPA Review is a hidden gem in the CPA Review industry and I really, really like their stuff. If this were one of the packages that everyone knew about and was familiar with…this post would be pointless.

However, people buy CPA review packages because 1) their firm uses a specific brand or 2) word of mouth.

If my sister were going to buy a CPA Review package, I would point her without a second’s hesitation to Yaeger. That’s how strongly I feel about it. Maybe it’s the fact that they are family-owned and that I can call Dr. Yaeger on a Saturday afternoon and ask him questions. Maybe it’s the fact that their instructors have every designation imaginable after their name (Dr. Yaeger – CPA, CFP, MBA, PHD) or Cynthia who teaches FARE (CPA, CMA, CFM, CIA, CGFM) that impresses me. I think it’s the combination of these two (personal service and industry-leading credentials), but most importantly, I like the lecture-style format.

Let Dr. Yaeger tell you in his own words (Internet Explorer recommended…I can’t get Firefox to play it) about his course.

The free Yaeger FARE webcast is this Thursday night (Click here for details) and if you want your question answered, be sure to get your question in now. The webcast is only an hour long and assuming that each question takes an average of 5 minutes to answer, that leaves time for twenty questions.

Dr. Yaeger is organizing questions and grouping them by type. If you need help with bonds and there are 10 questions on bonds, then Dr. Yaeger will likely pick one bond question that encompasses the topic. Again, there’s no guarantee that your question will get answered if you wait and if you’re taking FARE this month – you need all the help you can get.

When I took FARE, my personal struggles were:

1)Statement of cash flows (both methods)
2)Pensions

I prayed and prayed that I wouldn’t get hit very hard with those.

Yaeger is also offering the readers of this site a $550 discount on their complete review package. Click here for details.

A message from Phil Yaeger of Yaeger CPA Review:

We first met Jeff in mid-2008 when he was trying to pass BEC and looking for help after three unsuccessful attempts. While ordering our BEC Audio Cram product, he mentioned that he had a blog that we should take a look at sometime. While reading this site, we realized that Jeff was writing about the very same things that we hear from candidates on a daily basis: candidates are struggling with the exam and they think that they must be the only ones out there who feel that way. People talk openly about passing the exam in their first try. People don’t talk openly about the fact that they are struggling and to make matters worse, they’ve already spent thousands of dollars on review materials with little to show for it and they want to know if we can help.

We like Jeff’s transparency and honesty about his exam scores and struggles along the way. We think that he’s doing a good thing by providing this resource to candidates and are proud to be associated with his blog. We decided to provide candidates who read this site exclusive discounts on our review materials. The discounts on this site are even better than what we offer large accounting firms who buy our product.

I believe that we offer the best review course in the industry because we have the best instructors with industry-leading credentials and we offer the best service. If you pick up the phone and call our company, you talk to me – not a customer service representative who knows nothing about accounting, let alone the CPA Exam. If you are struggling with a topic on the exam and you’re a Yaeger student, you can call me and I will work with you until you understand it. No other review company gives you direct access to the owner of the company as well as his team of instructors whenever you need it. That is the Yaeger difference.

With the discount codes that we have provided the readers of Jeff’s blog, the best review course in the industry is also the most affordable review course in the industry. As Jeff will tell you, he struggled with the exam for two years until he bought our products and then he PASSED the CPA Exam. I am confident that we can do the same for you.

Call me – I’m always here to help,

Phil Yaeger, CPA, CFP, MBA, PhD

In response to my request for CPA Review companies to offer discounts to this site’s readers, Yaeger CPA Review has made several generous offers to the readers of another71.com.

One of them is that Dr. Phil Yaeger has agreed to provide people who read this site with exclusive free access to himself and other Yaeger CPA Review instructors on the evening of Thursday May 8, 7-8 pm Eastern.

A live webcast will take place that night covering the Financial Accounting and Reporting section of the CPA Exam. This one hour webcast is completely FREE and a link will be provided closer to the date of the webcast.

This webcast is open to all readers of this site who are CPA Exam candidates and studying for the Financial Accounting and Reporting (FARE) section of the CPA Exam. You do not have to be a current Yaeger CPA Review student to participate in this webcast. If you have a general question about FARE or a question about a certain topic and would like the Yaeger CPA Review instructors to discuss it, there are 3 ways to send them your question:

1) e-mail Phil Yaeger at phil@yaegercpareview.net

2) Call Dr. Yaeger during the live webcast at (301)315-0888

3) Leave a comment on this posting and I will make sure that they get the question

If you have a specific problem from the Wiley CPA Review Financial Accounting and Reporting text that you would like for them to go over, they can do that as well.

Please send questions ahead of time, if possible.

Note: This one hour webcast is for the Financial Accounting and Reporting section of the exam only. Subsequent webcasts covering the other three sections of the exam are to follow.

After this webcast is broadcast live, it will be archived on Yaeger CPA Review’s website for future viewings in case you missed or want to watch it again.

I began Wiley module 35 – Partnership Taxation this morning. I worked an hour and a half holed-up in a conference room during lunch, and then another two hours after work.

I was proficient at some aspects of partnerships, but after watching Yaeger’s cram DVD section over it and working through the Wiley book with Dr. Yaeger, I have it nailed down. I did 32 multiple choice questions that Dr. Yaeger lists as an assignment and I scored a 94%. One of the the things that I like about Dr. Yaeger is that when he goes over a multiple choice question, he not only discusses the relevant facts about the question, but also gives examples of what would happen given an opposite fact pattern or an exception. This method of learning and reinforcement suits me perfectly.

My areas of weakness easily identified while working through the lecture:

1. Items not included in the adjustment for ordinary income on the Schedule 1065

2. Order of adjustments to basis in a distribution to arrive at an ordinary loss

3. Gain/loss rules for liquidating and non-liquidating distributions

4. The treatment of unrealized receivables for a cash-basis partnership

I have to admit that halfway through the lecture I began to hate partnerships. It had nothing to do with the book or the video – it was mostly due to the fact that I was tired of sitting. I sit all day at work and then I was sitting there watching a lecture on partnerships. Also, there’s just no way to spice up partnership taxation. I stood up and watched 15 minutes of the lecture standing and highlighting. It worked, I suppose because now I’m ready for corporations.

CPA Exam Hell Weak is right on schedule, surprisingly.

I’m finished with Module 21 (Professional Responsibilities) in the Wiley 2008 REG book. I’m going through Yaeger CPA Review’s DVD Cram program (which uses the Wiley books) and I think it’s awesome so far. Dr. Yaeger walks you through the text at a high level overview, but is detailed enough to not leave anything important behind. The REG DVD cram alone is 15 hours long and that doesn’t include the time you spend with the video on pause while you work multiple choice questions.

The module covers:
Code of conduct
Accountant’s legal liabilities
Criminal liability
Private Securities Litigation Reform Act
New responsibilities under SOX
Statutory liability against accountants

I never completely wrapped my mind around the difference between the 1933 and 1934 Securities acts when it comes to negligence, reliance, and scienter. It can be summed up this way:

1933: No scienter or reliance needed to sue
1934: Scienter AND reliance are needed to sue.

That helps me keep them straight.

I did 75 multiple choice questions and scored around 90%, so I have it down I think.

I wrote myself a note to place by my laptop because I have a tendency to goof off and check sports and news on the internet instead of study:

Every Minute Counts…KEEP GOING.

On to partnerships…

I have 2 sets of cram DVDs from Yaeger CPA coming in the mail and I am very excited about them. I also purchased the Wiley CPA texts that go with them.

The “cram” courses cover all of the important topics covered in the Wiley textbooks from start to finish.

I’ve been doing a lot of studying and I feel like I need that one last onslaught of review prior to taking the exams.

My plan: Beginning 3 days prior to my exams, I will begin the BEC cram. It’s 9 hours long and it will take me from start to finish in the Wiley book and whatever weak areas remain should be fortified at least to a point where I can score a 75. That’s all I care about – a 75. I scored a 71 in January.

I will wrap up the BEC cram two days prior to the exam and start with the Regulation cram. The REG cram is a beast (15 hours), which makes sense because Regulation covers a lot of ground between entity taxation and Business Law topics. I’ll finish the REG cram sometime around dinner time the night before the exam and will likely call it a night after that. A 24 hour cram binge will deserve some down time prior to my exams the next morning.

As I’ve shared before, if I don’t pass one of these sections, I have to re-take FAR and the prospect of doing that again should cause a person to do WHATEVER it takes to pass. I’m looking forward to getting my cram DVDs…

With my 2 exams just days away now, I purchased Yaeger’s audio set for BEC and REG.

I chose Yaeger over the other audio reviews out there for two reasons:

1. I don’t have to wait for CDs – I can download them from their website.

2. The material is condensed into a “cram” format.

At $95 per section, they’re pretty affordable and comparably priced to similar products. If it makes the difference of a few points on the exam, then it’s worth it in my opinion (coming from someone who scored a 74 on REG).
