[BEC] Just took BEC and wow. what a joke

I used Becker, did all lectures, followed by questions, went back, did questions again, while doing note cards frequently.

I then went through and redid the B5 lecture, and then did all 140 b3 supplemental q’s and 195 b5 supplemental questions.

I continued to do the questions, marking the difficult ones, reviewing book for gray areas, etc. I also did the two final exams becker offers (which are a complete waste of time bc none of the questions were anything like the exam questions). By the time I was ready to take the exam, I felt comfortable I had mastered every single chapter and understood every question (well, not all of them, because some give wrong explanations or are just ridiculous).

I was very frustrated throughout the exam today. SOOO many irrelevant and stupid questions. I can understand that they want to be tricky and get you thinking outside the box, but there were just so many questions that were not in the becker course or anything near it – and that were just so dumb.

I was honestly expecting to walk out knowing I got over a 90%. Depending on how my educating guessing went, I would say I’m in the range of a 65-75. Best of luck!

I am sure you did better than you think! I have been there though, so I know how it feels. There have been a couple times I wondered if I was taking the right exam! But just fyi, you may have broken some disclosure rules…just in case you cant' find your post…it may get deleted. 🙂

my professor at college told me specifically becker cpa questions for BEC are much harder than the actual test, and for the finance section it will be too hard for you to even worry about because becker has no idea what they will test…apparently BEC is very new (the type of questions they ask) so becker had to take an educated guess in preparing their MCQ

I had the same experience when I took BEC on Jan 5th. I took AUD in Oct and felt like Becker really prepared me for the test. I ended up getting a 95 and I barely knew a thing about auditing before I began reviewing. I studied Becker's BEC material inside and out. I was getting 80's on my practice tests, I knew all of the concepts and formulas and I have an MBA. However, my test seemed sooooo screwed up, like it was a joke or something. The IT portion was really out there. Plus, I used Becker, the supplemental material online, and Wiley to study IT. It was all pointless because I had to guess on most of the IT questions. It was just a weird/bad test.

sounds like everyone is going to struggle with it, so hopefully our work experience and the fact that we put in the time will put us ahead of the curve!! I was very disappointed with what I was tested on. I just wish I could understand what these people are thinking with some of the questions when compared to what the main points of the material are, if that makes sense. I have 5 years of big 4 experience, another 1.4 years at a regional firm, and studied my but off, and a lot of the stuff was easy to learn because I have applied it so often throughout my work experience. There were just a lot of Q's that I said “you have got to be kidding me”

maybe i got lucky but there were only a few questions that I felt becker didnt prepare me for and that was probably because I didn't do all the required homework/appendix reading. Only about 2-3 questions on the exam were like new material that I had never seen.

that's comforting to hear dobat, I'm taking Becker right now and I was worried I'm wasting my time with these questions…how did you feel Becker's financial section prepared you for the test? There's so much random crap in this chapter and so many random formulas to learn, the only reason I'm questioning how much time to put into it is that I remember one of the Becker instructors told me they don't have actual CPA exam questions for finance, and they (Becker) made them all up like they do for their final exams.

I was a finance and accounting major in college so the financial stuff was really basic stuff, but if I didnt know the material I think becker did a good job. just know how to discount cash flows like cash flow / (1+discount rate)^T where t is how many time periods(years or if somehting compounds semi annual its t=2 for 1 year since 2 periods in a year) you are discounting it. and know wacc and capm. wacc is very simple if you think about it its just the weighted cost of capital….whatever % in debt you have times the cost of debt (a %) plus the % of your cap structure in equity times the cost of equity (another % or rate).

This is just my $0.02 worth, but I think that the Wiley books do a much better job of preparing you for BEC than the Becker review materials. I used both, and I found that the Wiley questions more closely resembled what I saw on the exam. In my opinion, it's well worth the $50 to get the Wiley book and churn through the questions, especially the IT section.

skiw97 – You have no idea how I feel about the way you described your BEC exam expreience. “IT IS LIKE YOU TYPED MY THOUGHTS” – I felt exactly the same way you did after taking that killer. I thought I was going to nail it but got a shocking 74 :((

    BEC 69, 74, 75 (EXPIRED) 77

oh man Sherriaf… tough blow… I'll let you know how I did as soon as they post the results. If I got a 74 I may break something, all those late nights, coffees, note card reviews, etc etc. I just wanna know what goes through these peoples heads when they are deciding what q's to put on the exams. They arent even “book smart” questions, just total off the wall gibberish.

Anyway, I see you are from Michigan, GO BLUE
