So far behind on studying…..

Work has been insane. I’m actually in Advisory at a Big 4, and we are rocking the house right now. So much so, that I have no time to study. I take BEC on November 30, and I’m only in the middle of Chapter 3 (Becker, 5 chapters). My plan was to be done with the book by this weekend and just do practice exams every day, so that I don’t have to cram over Thanksgiving weekend. Well, at least I had the foresight to schedule it for Monday Nov 30……just in case.

Good luck. BEC is tough because of the diversity of material but I'm sure you'll be fine if you get through everything.

I was in the same situation in September. I wanted a full two weeks for review, but it just didn't happen. Since each chapter is an entirely different topic, rather than building on one another, I decided to slow down and learn each one a bit more in depth than I had for the other sections. For FAR, AUD, and to some degree REG, I needed more time for review after “plowing through” each lesson so that I could see how topics from different chapters related to each other. That's not the case with BEC. Each chapter basically stands alone. Take your time learning it now, and you won't need as much review as you might think. If you finish by 11/22, you can review one chapter per day Monday through Friday and take practice exams all weekend. It probably won't be the greatest Thanksgiving you have ever had, but think about how much better next year's will be! Good luck.

    P.S.

Take this advice with a grain of salt – I don't actually have a score yet!

@CACPASOON. Thanks. That's good to know. So far, I've only taken REG, and you're right. I plowed through it, then did practice exams for 2 weeks. But this is different. The information is varied. The only thing helping me is that I've worked in this field, did a lot of this in school (no jokes about the stupid things people say), so it's a more detailed review of what I've learned over the last 10 years. That being said, I'm terrified of this one, especially since I didn't get my REG score yet (hopefully, next week!!).

glutenator….your situation is similar to mine. I am also taking BEC on November 30th. Except instead of being busy at work, I am just having trouble getting motivated to study. This is my last section (passed FAR in August, just took AUD and REG in October so waiting on scores) so I'm just getting burned out from so much studying. I was stuck on Chapter 3 in Becker earlier this week and it was very frustrating. Fortunately, I pushed through it and breezed through Chapter 4 and now I'm starting Chapter 5. I'll be so glad to be done with those lectures! Then it will be on to reviewing for the next two weeks… Anyway, just wanted to share my pain with you! Good luck!

Also, when it comes to Business Structure questions… they word them harder than the question really is… it helps to draw out what they are saying during the test. Just remember the main principles of each business formation and this should be easy points… Econ is barely tested (2,3 questions…)

    ? AUD - 87 (8/12/09)
    ? REG - 77 (1/15/10
    ? BEC - 77 (1/6/09 - Expired) / 79 (11/18/10)
    ? FAR - 75 (2/11/11)

@SaraCPA. I'm also anxiously awaiting REG results, which is making it harder to concentrate. I hope to finish Chap 3 tomorrow, then knock out Chap 4 on Sunday and Monday. Then 5 by next weekend, and on to the review. We'll see how it goes.

I had to retake BEC after receiving a 74 and a 71 my previous two times… my advice to you is to work the MC 4,5 times. The questions are very similar and always take a look at the question twice… there were times during the exam where I re-read a question and I noticed that I skipped a word and it changed the answer. The obvious mistakes are always answer choices as you know… so if you happen to strike an answer quickly… review it…

    ? AUD - 87 (8/12/09)
    ? REG - 77 (1/15/10
    ? BEC - 77 (1/6/09 - Expired) / 79 (11/18/10)
    ? FAR - 75 (2/11/11)

The homework in Chapter 5 of Becker takes alot of time to complete. After spending a few hours each on chapters 1-4, I was shocked by what it took to do the problems in 5. I bet I spent almost as much time on chapter five as I did total for 1-4. There are just so many HW problems with calculations. Budget some extra time…

I spent my Thanksgiving weekend last year doing nothing but studying Audit…this year I'm spending it on a beach in Mexico. There is an end in sight. This exam also ruined 2 birthdays (took my first exam the day after my birthday in year 1, and my last exam on my birthday in year 2), the Superbowl, Memorial Day weekend, and 4th of July weekend…oh and most of the days in between…

Good luck – you'll be done soon too 🙂

Yeah, waiting on 2 scores definitely doesn't help with my motivation problem. I've been pretty calm about it the past few weeks but I'm starting to get nervous now that the release dates are getting closer. And now I'm not looking forward to a weekend of Chapter 5 based on what JylCo said! Oh well, I'll get through it! And thanks for the advice glogo, that was pretty much my plan of attack for my review so it's nice to know I'll be on the right track…

@Sara CPA – you'll be fine. I just wish someone would have told me that when I was planning my studying. I am a last minute person, so I alloted the same amount of time for chapter 5 as I did for the rest and it really hurt me in the end. I started chapter 5 homework thinking I'd get it done in 3 or 4 hours (based on the # of questions and the other chapters) – it took me about 13 hours to work them once. Of course, this was 2 days before my exam, so I really screwed up my having time to review the other chapters. I was working some of the chapter 5 BEC problems for the first time the night before my test. I scored a 73 the first time, and I know it was because I didn't have that review time.

My study method was to watch all the lectures the weeks before the exam and do ALL the homework once 4-5 (@ 10-12 hours a day) days before the exam and do nothing but revew on the day before. I worked each question in each chapter until I scored 100%. You are WAY ahead of where I was when I started chapter 5 homework. I didn't score super high on any section, but I passed FAR (81) and AUD (78) the first time this way, took BEC twice (73, 75) and Reg twice (71, 77).
