I am just curious if anyone has been working in the private industry during their accounting/finance career and then decided to get their CPA and go work for one of the Public accounting firms. Is that normal or something someone would consider? I have heard that you get burned out from working at the BIG 4 so does it make sense to want to get a job there if you are aleady working in the private industry let’s say for over 7 years?

I spent 3 years as an auditor in public accounting. It was a small firm with 3 offices and 50 employees. I left for private and spent 9 years working for a small SEC filer. I moved up very quick in the company. The hours and stress of annual and quarterly reporting deadlines got to me. I made a change a year ago and went to work for a firm with two shareholders. One is retiring. This was the best move for me and my family. I make less than half of what I used to but the stress and hours are nothing compared to what I dealt with on the private side.
