I would like to make the jump from senior accountant to controller. I have 6 years of experience, but none of it is in budgeting and forecasting. I’m worried that if I applied for a controller position, I would be over my head. I’ve never been in a decision making position.

The duties of a Controller are all relative depending on size of firm and what kind of controller -divisional, regional, fund, corporate, etc. I would start with an Assistant Controller position and then move up from there. Usually you go from Senior accountant to accounting manager then to assistant controller followed by controller, so you would be skipping some steps, but again it depends on size of firm. Some firms only have a CFO, controller and accountant. Also, you have to actually apply for the job and get that offer before you worry about not being able to perform. Your experience may be considered light for most mid to large size firms, so you would likely be in the market for a very small firm where there are added responsibilities due to the accounting team usually being very small.
