Will at least attempting the exam help?

    I just graduated in May this year with my bachelors in accounting. I was a year behind in school so I was able to graduate with 150 credits without taking any grad classes so I decided to sign up for BEC and AUD this summer. So far its been a week and wishing cost accounting wasn’t the first accounting class I took 2 years ago! Everything seems so foreign. But anyways I decided to try to take these exams this summer since I have a part time job bookkeeping where I only have to work around 15 hours a week so figured might as well waste away my summer doing this. I’m taking grad accounting classes in the fall that I think will help me pass the other parts of the test. During that time I’m planning on going through the schools fall accounting interview process. The majority of my friends have done internships at the big four firms and enrolled in the MPA program (because they think they need to be in order to qualify for the CPA). Just wondering if employers will be interested in me if I mention on my resume that I’m signed up to take those 2 parts? Interviews are usually in September and I would be getting back my BEC score before then. And during an interview do employers look down on you for failing? I would think not but who knows. Also, regardless or whether I pass or not would employers be more likely to hire me based on the fact I am trying to pass now over someone who is still in graduate school and not taking it help? Stupid questions I know but would appreciate some input.

    Well just my 2 cents…

    1. In your entire passage, I see nothing about which review course you are using. It would be to your best advantage to have a review course that way you aren't studying all willy nilly. At least that way the courses generally have it down to a science on how to go about studying and WHAT to study.

    2. Have you decided what you want to do…I too also did an internship during college and HATED auditing, it was so friggin boring and ended up taking a job doing…wait for it….COST, which i HATED in college. But it wasn't so bad in the real world. Got to fly around and go to the companies manufacturing plants to see if everything was up to par.

    3. I think employers will be interested in the fact that you are preparing for the CPA because it looks like you are exposing yourself to more acctg than the average applicant who walks thru the door with their B.S.

    4. Very optimistic about getting your score back…Here it is almost June and i took my test almost 6 weeks ago and NOTHING, with that being said you don't even have to disclose your score to the employer. Simply state I have not recieved my score yet. Chances are with the AICPA that will TOTALLY BE THE TRUTH.

    5. It all would depend on the employer, you have to remember you will never know what is important to that employer. They may want a CPA because of what they think you can bring to the table….OR may not for whatever reason. They may value Grad degrees more…who knows it is going to be a coin toss.

    I would say do your research on the company…get a good interview book from the library (try knock em dead)….but first go on a bunch of BS interviews to get rid of the butterflies and learn where you need to give better answers and depend on you to get you there and then when you achieve your designation….DEMAND MORE MONEY….LOL

    HOPE THIS HELPS

    IL - BECKER=============> DONE
    REG - 80; FAR - 65,79; AUD - 53,78; BEC - 71,68, 75 (used becker and yaeger for 3rd BEC)Ethics 95

    Sorry forgot to mention that. I'm using the bisk textbook. I bought Yaeger CRAM with the wiley book as well because I have read good reviews about it. As for what I want to do, I'm not sure. I took individual income tax last semester and surprisingly liked it even though the class was the most challenging class I've ever taken. Doing an internship/job is the only way to really find out like you said. I used to be a teller for 2 years during college so at least I've narrowed out banking 🙂 Thanks a ton for the post back though. Really helps.

    I would second magic_8_ball's message of not ruling anything out based on your college experience. I found cost accounting boring in college and thought I wanted to work in public accounting doing auditing. Well after a couple years of working in public accounting I am beginning to wonder if I had it backwards. I now wonder why I ever thought I would like being an auditor. I think the next time I look for a job I will focus on finding a cost accounting position or possibly a government position with the IRS or similar agency.
