So my boss asked me if there were any certification or credentialing programs that I was interested in taking – does anyone have any suggestions (I’ve been a CPA since January of this year)? It doesn’t necessarily have to be accounting-related.

    AUD: Attempt 1: 60; Attempt 2: 78
    BEC: Attempt 1: 75 (lost credit); Attempt 2: 80
    FAR: Attempt 1: 74; Attempt 2: 74; Attempt 3: 78
    REG: Attempt 1: 76 (lost credit); Attempt 2: 68; Attempt 3: 80

    Finished 11/01/2013!!!

If you have an interest in IT security, you could always go for the CISA (Certified Information Systems Auditor). I think it's a good complement to the CPA.

    BEC - 88
    AUD - 74, 87
    REG - 77
    FAR - 63, 82

    CIA certified in 2013

Thanks for the suggestion LaComptable! Unfortunately, I don't think I'd ever fulfill the experience requirement.

What is your area of specialty right now? Or conversely, what is an area of specialty you would like to go into?

    MBA,CMA,CPA, CFF?, ABV?

I work in the finance department but I serve a compliance role. I really wanted to get certified as a PMP but I don't meet the requirements as far as experience goes. I'd like to do something outside of the realm of accounting and finance, but my search hasn't been so fruitful. Although I do have the opportunity to get certified as a six sigma green belt through my company. I'm just trying to get a feel for what else is out there.

I think you are going about this backwards. Find something you want to do and then get the certification in that area. Of course, you are going to run into experience issues with just about any certification that is worth a damn because you haven't done anything in whatever area that is. I would figure out what you want to do first…then see if you can sit without the experience..then use the passed exams to help get you the experience…

I started the CPA journey back in 2009 when I was at a Big 4. I ended up getting laid off prior to passing all four sections, found another job not in accounting because times were bad (but ended up liking the job a lot), met the director who asked me about my background, said he'd pay for the prep courses and exams, so I took advantage of it. I don't like leaving things unfinished.

@How many letters do you need – I don't completely disagree with your comments, and thanks for the feedback. But here are two examples of how that doesn't work all the time. If I wanted to get certified as a PMP, I can't do that because I don't have the work experience. The only way to get my PMP is by getting the work experience requirement out of the way. That will eventually happen, but not for a while. The CMA is another example. I don't necessarily qualify to sit for the exam (I'm in the middle of finding out if my work experience will qualify me to sit. I called the IMA and they're looking into it.) because I don't have the required work experience in managerial or cost accounting. Thus I would have to acquire the work experience prior to sitting for the exam.
