I have looked through the CIMA website and can’t figure out a few things. I don’t have my CPA and am not currently a member of the AICPA or CIMA. To get the certification, all I need to do is sign up for the CIMA membership? And that’s even if I don’t have the CPA yet?

Also, with this possibly challenging the IMA’s CMA certification, any recommendations on me still pursuing the CMA certification? Just curious of people’s opinions…

Not sure if anyone cares but I chatted online with a rep from the CIMA and asked them about the CGMA and other questions regarding the certificaiton and even comparing it to the CMA…

Welcome to CIMA, CIMA01 will be right with you.

Hi my name is Zahid. How can I help you today?

    John

I am interested inthe CGMA certification. I am not currently an AICPA or CIMA member and do not yet have my CPA. Am I eligible for the CGMA if I sign up for the CIMA membership

    John

    ?

    CIMA01

Yes it is only fully qualified CIMA members who will be eligible for the CGMA designation (except AICPA members of course). so once you complete the CIMA qualification you will be eligible for the CGMA designation

    John

How much longer will this situation hold true? Does this “grace” period for the certification end soon? Will there eventually be a test that will need to be passed in order to receive the CGMA?

    CIMA01

From 2015 there will be CGMA assessments, aimed at testing the knowledge and skills needed by CGMAs

    John

So I have until 2015 to receive the designation without completing an exam?

    CIMA01

Basically yes, although the details regarding the assessment remains sketchy at best the assessment will basically consist of material from the CIMA syllabus which you would have studies anyway to get to the stage of applying for CGMA status

    CIMA01

    studied*

    John

And is the thought that the CGMA will one day hold more weight or regarded higher than the IMA's CMA certificaiton?

    CIMA01

Possibly, as it is a new designation, it's performance internationally remains to be seen to be honest with you. But bear in mind the weight behind the CGMA is ultimately the AICPA qualification or the CIMA qualification as these are the still the main qualifications the CGMA is simply an added benefit for even greater recognition worldwide

    John

Understood. Any other advice or opinions on the matter you could render?

    CIMA01

The CGMA will come by itself without too much effort, the main thing is to get through the CIMA qualification and of course it has to be the right career choice for one's self.

    John

Great. Thank you for your help.

jjm, I am very skeptical that a designation that is given simply for being in the right place at the right time can ever hold more weight than a designation you have to work as hard to earn as we would for the CMA (I am sure you feel the same way in part or you wouldn't have asked those questions).

To me, a designation that is given simply on the merit of signing up for it can't hold much weight. I dunno. I may do it just because it can't hurt………

So how do you join CIMA? Is there a test and exp requirement?

The CIMA qualifications path is much more rigorousl than you think. I am pretty sure you have to submit a 7-12 page CV showing your management accounting experience and qualifications.
