After a lot of research and looking into what I would like to do, I am leaning heavily towards getting into tax. Personally I think once a person is a CPA the EA certification is not worth it, but that is not the case in this situation. I am still in undergrad and will have completed my undergrad tax courses after this semester. I plan on getting my CPA, but will need 150 to sit and won’t have that until graduation.

I am considering sitting for the SEE prior to my recruiting period (Fall 2014). I plan on using the EA certification as a job search tool. It is my thought that, if you have something on your resume that demonstrates tax knowledge when applying for a tax job, your chances of getting the job are greater. Any thoughts?

My accounting GPA is a 3.4, my overall GPA is a little lower. My GPA is part of the reason I am considering adding the EA certification to my resume prior to recruiting.

I was in a similar situation. I had just graduated, and took the SEE to help get me a job in tax while I finished the 150. I work at a small firm, so I can't speak as to how others would view the EA, but I don't think it could hurt you.

I am currently an EA working towards the CPA. The EA is very easy to obtain. And once you get it, it's doesn't really cost much per year to maintain. Plus, it's nice to have on your resume and list of qualifications too.

I spoke to an ancient wise man who sent me on a mushroom induced journey through an ancient forest to find the key to passing the CPA exam. A talking spider monkey told me to throw the last of my drinking water in the dirt to find what I was looking for. So I followed his instructions and the following message appeared in the soil:

When I took it, I was less than a year removed from my tax courses. I had a review book, but basically just read the chapters the week before my exam. I passed all 3 parts within a month or two. You get the score when you finish that part, which is nice.

To get my 150, I just took classes online through a local community college. I only needed about 4 classes, so I took ones I thought would be useful/interesting. I took them all in the same semester, so it was full time. This was a year ago, during tax season. I really had no desire to work for a larger firm, so I was looking at small local firms.
