NINJA Question –

I just preordered Wiley’s CPAexcel 2018 book set from Amazon and I haven’t touched any CPA study material yet. However, given that I’m currently a student, I’d like to obtain a CPA close to when I’ll graduate and right now is the perfect timing to start for me.

I’m just wondering if a combination of the Wiley CPAexcel book (I can self study) & Ninja Monthly (heard that the MCQ is better than Wiley) would be enough for me to pass as I cannot afford to pay $1000+ for a course.

Those 2 items + the blueprints from AICPA are enough to pass.

Also, you can buy used materials from 2015/2016/2017 for pennies on the dollar. There is NO harm in purchasing those for the MCQ/SIMS, even though there is probably quite a bit of overlap.

If you're privy with pirating there are numerous study items available online in the usual places. I won't disclose much but you'd know where to look if you're into that sort of thing. I'm not endorsing this, just pointing it out.

I haven't thought about MCQ/SIMS from previous years since I figured to get the latest edition to study since the test changes every year but that's a great idea. As far as piracy goes, I found older material, but as I said, yearly changes. Also it's a lot easier for me to study on an actual book than ebook since I can just sit somewhere I know I won't get distracted.

I'll have to look into the blueprints from AICPA later.

The 2015 Wiley Complete Test Bank is available at Amazon for just $50. It will give you a card with a pin code, once activated you will be accessing what is the latest in the Wiley website I bought the 2015 Wiley Test bank just recently – after I already passed AUD. For the price I can use it for REG and FAR (I already owned Ninja for BEC). I activated it and my access is for the 2018 Test Bank for all sections. Worth the $50 IMO.

That's actually pretty amazing.

How long will the access last? Does it actually give you every section?

The test changes but not enough each year to ‘seriously' warrant new materials. I mean, when they did IFRS and claimed it would be 3-10% of your test, then new materials might be worth it (or when they added Gov't and NFP).

IMO there are minimal changes and studying old years won't throw you off as bad as you think. Remember, many of the things they test are concepts and not necessarily numbers or exact information. If you go to AICPA website and look at test questions from 2015 you will see those question are still TOTALLY relevant. But don't rely on it as your only info since it is technically out-dated.

Use your 2018 stuff and supplement it with older items. Throw those older digital files on your phone and do MCQs in the bathroom or when you're on a bus. Those PDF items come in super handy.

Yes I have access to every section (2018 AUD, 2018 BEC, 2018 REG and 2018 FAR). Expires 1 year after activation, in my case my access said expires December 29, 2018.

95% of my studying was done with ninja mcq with some very light reading of the ninja book. I was in the same boat trying to save some money.

Please make sure to take notes on mcqs that you get wrong to help you review later. Also try to understand why incorrect answers are wrong.

Wiley offers a student discount, so you could maybe look at that and see if that helps lower the price enough. For what it's worth, I have Wiley and verrrrrry rarely watch the videos, so I think the book and a test bank is enough since that's primarily what I utilize.

I would recommend against pirating. We are aspiring CPAs or CPAs, and a big part of that is our ethics. I'm pretty sure pirating CPA software is highly unethical.
