Educational requirements in NC. Should I look into this?

    Hello everyone,

I have one exam left and then I will have to fulfill the educational requirements in NC, which is 150 hrs. I currently have a 128 plus 12 of graduate level classes, for a total of 140 hrs. A thought hit me this morning, however, and I was needing some help in determining if it is valid. I transferred 64 hrs from an associates degree in accounting to a university, however, I had to complete 67 hrs to complete the associates degree. So, in actuality, I currently have 143 hours. That may seems trivial, but I was hoping on finishing with the exams in March, while taking one class in the spring, one in the summer and two in the fall respectively. However, if those three hours in fact do count toward my 150, I can suck it up and take two classes in the summer and get my certificate (I will have two years experience in public accounting by that point). So what are your thoughts on this? Can those three extra hours help me get finished faster?

    Thanks in advance.

Ask for a transcript review by the state board. I did, and found out that 6 hours of sophmore level acct courses didn't count so I had to take 21 extra hours to get to the 30 hour requirement instead of just 15 as I had thought.

My total hours are close to 175 at this point.

Iceman, did you have to go through the CPA Central website at any point for transcript review? Or you just directly dealt with the State Board only

There has to be a reason that the Univ. required 67 to convey a degree.
Perhaps some of your lower level classes were doubled up. I know when I transferred credits, they classified 2 of my classes as covered by only one class at the university level, so 6 credits became 3.
I'd try the NASBA education evaluation, or send your transcripts to your state's CPA board.
NY CPA Board takes forever to review or get back to you, hopefully NC is better.
You also might be able to get away with credits that are not graduate level. Lots of people have had success using the California community college credits, which are cheaper.
    Good luck.

The undergraduate program I went through required that I transfer 64 hours. They would not let me transfer any additional hours. I had 128 hours total for my 4 year degree. I guess I was just wondering what the fate was of the three that couldn't get transferred. They are community college level classes, so there's that. I tried emailing somebody at the board, but they always have these weird, short cookie cutter little replies. The reply was something to the effect of “Please provide both transcripts when you apply.” So, do I just start the process when I get 150, including the three hours in limbo and just see what happens?

NASBA/CPA Examination services does not evaluate the education for North Carolina candidates, so the NC Board would be the only option regarding the education needed to sit for the exam vs licensure. They also do not handle the education evaluation for the following states:

Alabama Arizona Arkansas California District of Columbia Florida Guam Idaho Illinois Kentucky Maryland Mississippi Nevada North Carolina North Dakota Oklahoma Oregon South Dakota Texas U.S. Virgin Islands Virginia West Virginia

Send in your application and transcripts now so you get an official ruling from the board?

I just emailed her back and asked if there was some way I could clarify all this beforehand. I don't know if there is, but I would really like to know.

@SGood, do you know how long it usually takes for advisory evaluation of credits via Nasba? Or anyone from experience know?

It depends, how many schools did you attend, are you having foreign evaluations completed, when did you apply versus when did you submit documentation. It would take the same time as an official evaluation because the same evaluation is being done. The pre-eval just gives you a heads up on any additional courses you may need. It will, however, speed up the official evaluation when you complete your FT application since all the education has been reviewed previously, BUT you still have to submit official documents and that takes time to be received and processed. You can contact your coordinator and they can give you the estimates on how long it would probably take. Honestly the longest wait is for correct and thorough documentation to be submitted.

Have you tried to talking to Mr. Brooks at the NC Board? He's good about talking to candidates with special circumstances. (919) 733-1425
