Question on IL CPE Requirement using Becker

    Hello guys,

I had a question about the CPE Requirement to maintain the CPA license for anyone who uses Becker for their CPE requirements. I called the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR) regarding this question, but, they were unsure. My question is regarding if Becker CPE courses count as “Verifiable CPE” per the rules of IL. We need 120 hours of CPE every 3 years. From the 120 hours, Interactive self study is 80 hours and non-interactive is 60 hours. If I buy the Becker CPE access course for 1 year, well, does this Becker CPE count towards the 80 interactive and 60 non-interactive? Don’t we need to physically go to a classroom and then that would count (not just watching Becker CPE videos solely)? That is where I am confused. I am a full-time student, so, I do not currently work. Thus, I have to use Becker to maintain my CPA license.

Becker has what they call: “On Demand” and “Live Broadcast” courses. However, no one seems to know the answer to this. The reason why I ask is because I’m about to buy the Becker CPE Course and get 1 year access, but I want to make sure I will meet the 120 hours of CPE requirements per the IL rules. I just want to make sure the Becker CPE access should ‘cover’ what the IDFPR calls as “verifiable CPE”. Has anyone here used Becker as their CPE Sponsor to maintain the CPA license? How has it been? See link below on IL Verifiable CPE rules.

    Thank you so much.

I can't comment on IL or Becker specifically. But I am under the impression if it is a live streamed course, even if you're watching it from home and not in a classroom, it would considered interactive, and it's self-study if it is a recorded lecture.

Becker Professional Education is listed on the NASBA national registry as an approved CPE provider.

Thank you @Andy! Does anyone have any information on this? I would love to get anyone else's input or if they came across something like this.

    Thank you so much!

I can't speak to Becker but I know my company has some connection with H&R block and they offer a lot of self-study online CPE that my coworkers use. The lessons are clearly designated as either counting or not counting toward CPE. I'd imagine that if these online, self-study lessons count that something like Becker would count.

I found this quote today on the FMVA certification website. might help with the definition of self-study & interactive courses.

“According to NASBA, a CPE self study program is an educational course completed by an individual, without any interaction or help from a live instructor. In order to satisfy Continuing Professional Education (CPE) requirements, self study programs require participants to take a test (a qualified assessment) to demonstrate they adequately understand course material and learning objectives.”
