So i just took REG today and it went about how most people on here have said it has been going. If I had not have already read past experiences, which still passed I would probably say I got 70 (maybe). The MCQs weren’t too horrible. However, I thought there were a ton of “favorite” topics and questions that both NINJA and Becker loved to continuously repeat that never even showed up on the exam. Even the topics I knew i was gonna see were formatted in a way very different then both ninja and becker had shown them in.

Now to the sims…..WTF was that. I don’t think they could have chosen more obscure topics or included more minute exceptions/variations to common topics even if they tried. If the research questions wasn’t in the last testlet i dont know what i would have done cause it took me a good 30 minutes to find the right answer. I maybe felt okay to good about 1 or 2 other sims and the rest I was just trying my best. What worries me the most about the sims section is on my BEC exam and my REG mocks there was always 1 or 2 sims that were question heavy (15-20+ questions) and contained a lot of selections for answers rather than straight typed in numbers. I feel like when you get to select an option you usually can know that answer for sure without actually knowing the calculation, which provides a lot more opportunity for points. However, this was not my experience on the exam which is troublesome.

If this were a normal test with normal grading I’d think my performance was worth around a 60%, but I’m praying for the same outcome as others who have shared their experiences and some of the AICPA grading magic.

@Michelle1605, you may have had different simulations than us :).

In fairness, the SIMS weren't that difficult – my problem is that I gambled a specific topic would be lightly tested, then saw three SIMS dedicated to it, which made me soil myself. But in my defense, this is my fourth exam and fifth attempt + I've completed the AICPA provided practice simulations, and it was the first time I got a SIM in which if your initial assumption is wrong (and mine likely was), the whole thing is wrong. Typically, they'll throw in something else that will enable you to receive partial credit. It would be poopy if I failed this exam because of one topic, but that's life.

I thought that the only difference could be the 2nd multiple choice testlet? It’s a nation-wide exam. But I do agree that I have no idea how the sims will be graded because any possible misstep could throw off the answer to the fill in the blank questions since they included multiple items in the calculations.

Took the REG exam this morning, this was my last exam and I walked out feeling pretty confident but we'll have to see. I feel this has to do a lot with the fact that my work background is in tax.

On the MCQs I feel that I did really good on them and were not too difficult. The SIMS (not surprisingly) were all focused on tax and I felt alright with them. However, there was a few where I used the authoritative literature on. As well, looking back, I know now that messed up on a few questions I was uncertain about.

The hard thing was actually the research question which took me 20 minutes of looking before I found it. So leave yourself extra time for that.

The other thing that surprised me was how lightly the TCJA changes were tested. The emphasis really seemed to be on corporate and partnership tax which did not change that much under the tax law as opposed to personal income tax.

I took REG on April 20th. The MCQ portions of the exam are probably the easiest out of all the other CPA exams I took. However the SIMs were crazy. My computer shuts down in the middle of the exam, prometric staff rebooted the computer and my answers were still there. Does anyone have experience that? Will it affect my test submission?

Same feeling here for the whole exam. Btw, I took mine on April 2nd. MCQ were fine but SIMs were crazy. The research question took me more than 30 mins and I even did not know whether my finding was correct. Some SIMs were testing on topics I knew a little about and I tried to use the authoritative literature but it did not work. Fingers crossed for the result on May 7th.

    Hi,

I took the exam on the 30th of April, and I must say that was the most annoying thing I have experienced so far in taking the CPA exams. I did 1,311 MCQ's averaging 90's. I got 77 and 80 on my mock exam's. I read every module and watched every video on Wiley. I did 265 hours worth of study, because I wanted to make sure I passed this exam. I did 100's of flash cards. I thought it was a for sure win on this exam. Let me TELL YOU. Those TBS's chewed me up and spit me out. I went over the questions in my Wiley modules, and I couldn't find any questions that looked like some of the questions I saw on the exam. That shit suuuuuuucked.

Thank you…I said my peace and if you need me I will be starting to study for BEC this weekend for my June 10th examination,

Just took Reg yesterday. MCQs were ok, not sure if I got a harder 2nd testlet or not. The SIMS were, as most people said, a complete disaster. It's not that it is complicated like FAR, it's more like “wth is this crap?” The only bright side is that I didn't run into any time issues because you either know the material or you don't.

To update the post, passed with an 89. They must just be coughing up partial credit and curve points.

@Recked thanks! I'm trying to balance the perfect amount of time needed to prepare for each exam with my need to dive a little deep into the concepts. I've seen your strategy before and have sort of modeled my study plan after yours but with additional time needed to understand the concepts. This is definitely a marathon, not a sprint.
