I’m getting ready to start studying for the exam again after a taking a few years off. I just read that IFRS is no longer going to be tested on FAR in 2021. Is that true? Are the similarities between GAAP and IFRS just so overlapping now that separating the two is no longer worth the trouble?

Yes it's true.
Roger always keep students up to date on changes to the CPA exam and I was informed that the changes would take effect in July 2021. However it doesn't mean that you need to wait, Roger suggests to still take FAR first and then AUD because there will be changes in that too. Any way I highly recommend to sign up to Roger's newsletter and just keep an eye on their Facebook/social media for updates.
