Hi guys I passed all parts but still 6 months away expriance wise. Does it make sense for me to keep myself as a CPA candidate? I know I am not a CPA but I passed all the exams… not sure how to make my self clear about it. Thanks for all the suggestions in advance!

Until you have a license you're a cpa candidate.

To be honest recruiter laugh at the CPA “candidate” title. Why? because you either are or you aren't. So it might work against you. If you want to show that you are working towards your cpa do it in the summary paragraph.

I was also told the term cpa candidate carries little to no weight because very technically anybody who meets the minimum requirements to sit, even if they've not applied can call themselves that. A cover letter or summary paragraph is definitely the place to elaborate. It's frustrating I know, I finished my master's in December 2011 but had to wait months for my degree to be conferred and being SO CLOSE for an extended period is hard but the hardest part is behind you.

You can probably put “CPA candidate – all exams passed” or something to that effect to make it clear that you have passed the exams which will give you an edge on candidates who haven't passed all of the exams.

Ensure you do not put “Your Name, CPA” or anything that says you are a fully qualified CPA.

Thanks for the advise guys! Very helpful. I want to stand out as I am looking for a position with a higher role, but I want potential employers know that I am just not 1 or 2 exams in. What would be the best best way to advertise yourself without desperately overselling it?

As everyone else already mentioned, you cannot call yourself a CPA until an actual license number has been issued to you. It is strictly prohibited.

I think I would go with Chrissy's suggestion. That makes the most sense.

Found this thread in a search.

Is it too much/unnecessary to write in your LinkedIn bio that your CPA license is pending upon approval from the state board?

Currently my bio says license is pending upon completing required work experience so I want to show that I've acquired the work experience.

    Thanks.

    @CantStopWontStop

I used something similar until I had my license number.

On my resume, I moved Education to the top, and under school I put something like
“CPA Candidate – All exams passed as of August 2017 and registration pending with the State of New Jersey. Work and education requiredments previously fulfilled.”

On LinkedIn under summary I put something similar. This made it show up in the searches and I was able to make it clear. But be very careful what you say, you can not hold yourself out as a CPA!

Also, It was EXTREMELY helpful in negotiating salary at my new position which I started last month.

@mad max is your username a Stranger Things 2 reference?

Alright so it seems safe to say my license is pending upon state board approval. I'm def aware not to call myself a CPA until I see the license #s.

nah, I've used the madmax handle for over 15-20 years now… my name is max– nothing special 😛

Stranger things is great though; halfway through the second season. Just waiting to get some time off that aligns with the gf so we can finish it together!

@CantStopWontStop I would actually double check with your state, sometimes having the license numbers doesn't mean you are “active”. Im in Ohio, and I was licensed but my status was “pending” until they were able to process my license fees. So I technically had my license number for a little over a week before I could use the designation. They make it pretty clear in Ohio that you cannot use the designation until your status is Active.

what a joke….this is just too funny to read. Talk about following the rules to the I and T.

At my firm a few newly minted CPA's use “CPA' after their name after just passing the 4 parts. It is assumed they will pass ethics and get apply for the license. The partner at our firm gave those people the OK to do so. We also have many CPA's that are licensed in VA, but our office is in MD and are not MD CPA's. Yet they still use CPA after their name

I see nothing wrong with the 2 above practices.

You guys need to calm down and take several Xanax

Lol it's to cover your ass and limit liability. Even if your partner tells you that you're allowed to use the CPA designation when you actually are not certified yet, you can get into legal trouble if the public were to rely on your information. You're a professional, you rely on your own choices and laws, not what a partner thinks is okay.
